WOW!  This show provided me with something I've been in search of for a while.  Thank you!!  The tip about Webelos meeting planning and the Webelos workbook (with the link) was great!  I'm an assistant Webelos den leader and we've been struggling to get ourselves super organized and keep the boys' activity badge work moving along.  When I heard about the link to USScouts and the Webelos workbook pages I clicked on over there and found them and they will help us tremendously.  I had been to those pages before, but enver noticed the file links that provide the super helpful PDF or .DOC worksheets for each activity badge.  I even realized that there are worksheets for the belt loops and pins (although some are missing).

Thank you Chris for all of the great info you share every week.  :)

Great show!

I've been away too long and have missed getting my weekly dose!!

I did want to mention a couple things about the Webelos segment.    Webelos don't need to wait until their second year to choose a patrol emblem.   They can do that as soon as they cross over.    Also … just because they are allowed to wear what BSA calls a "patrol" emblem — they are not patrols.   They're still Webelos dens with a denner.  With that said … .getting them moving toward the oncept of patrols and using he denner as a leader is exactly what we want to be doing.

Do you have the text for your Flag Retirement Ceremony posted?   I'd love a copy along with your flag prep notes.

Good stuff, as always!  I've done a couple of flag retirement ceremonies.  I learned it's very important to discuss the purpose of the ceremony before-hand, as you said.

After the first ceremony, one of my Den Leaders and a parent told me their Tiger's were really upset because "Mr. Bud burned a flag!"  We're a military community and most of the kids already know what it means to burn a flag in protest but none had seen an actual retirement.  I discussed the ceremony but didn't make it clear that's it's ok to retire a flag specifically by burning.

Also, I had several parents taking photos, which I was fine with, but had to remind them to not go "post happy" on Facebook with photos of flag burnings on a military base…I can only imagine the spin that would take if a certain liberal activist group got ahold of those pictures!

Our second retirement went much better.  I discussed the importance of showing the flag respect by giving it a proper burial vs. just throwing it away and letting it rot in a landfillsomewhere.  I also use the analogy of acting like you're church…kind of sets the mood and the kids get it.

I only allow the Webelos to help me with the ceremony (kind of a big-kid thing) and I actually let them hold the flag, cut it apart, and place it in the fire.  One thing I forgot to do was keep some of the ashes to add to the next retirement.

Since then, we've received several flags from different organizations to retire.  One is a ginormous battle-ship flag that must be 50 feet +!!  I'll let the new CM handle that…

In all technicality there's no such thing as Webelos I or Webelos II (or Jr. and Sr. Webelos) because there's simply a Webelos program and a Webelos is a Webelos.

But in our pack we have an annual "crossover" in late April where our Tigers officially become Wolves, Wolves become Bears and Bears become Webelos.  We felt we needed something to recognize the Webelos boys who are going from their first to second year in that program.  Our 5th grade Webelos boys in their second year as Webelos cross to Boy Scouts at the Blue & Gold Banquet in February, so we don't have to worry about them at this point.

What we came up with is that the Webelos Den at the end of their first year will become a Webelos Patrol, receive their emblem and move to the tan shirts (if they haven't already done so).  This is only the 2nd year we've done it but it seems to be working well so far.

I know that Webelos don't have patrols, just dens.  This is an internal designation to our unit; they're still technically a den we just call them the "<insert name here> patrol" rather than "Den <number>".  The way the den functions is still very much the same with Den Leader, Asst. Den Leader, Den Chief and Denner.

SMWalker : LOL oh  those silly leaders needing to classify  sub groups in the Webelos Scouts Program.

I believe that many programs have  just 1 den per grade level, so when boys go into Webelos Scouts it goes against our nature to classify things to have two groups that are the same.  However you track it in your pack is up to you.

In our pack we say every den is den 1, until or unless we need to split the dens into two or more.  Then we would have bear den 1 and bear den 2. For the moment, it is just the bear den.

We  track  the Webelos Den critters for 5 years so that a den does not repeat the same critter in known history. We just call the den's by their critter name in meetings.  So this year we have the Phoenix Den and the Scout Den.  The Scorpion, beaver, and flaming arrow den's  are currently in retirement.

In general, we have one den per grade level.   We have a bumper crop of Tigers and now have two dens (13 total).   All of our dens recieve numbers – they're not all den 1.   They're actually not assigned in order.    We have a bunch of older den strips and have been assigning den numbers based on which strips we have the most of!  ;-)    We've done this the past few years and the stock is getting under control.

We have Webelos I and Webelos II dens.   We also do a Spring crossover, graduation whatever you want to call it.  ;-)    We encourage our Bear den who are now Webelos to ditch their number and pick a den name.

I never thought about the "retiring" of den names.   What's your reasoning for this?   My webelos den was the first to use a den name.   The boys after us chose one.   Now, the current Webelos I den (2 years behind my son's den) chose the same den name.   I thought it was odd they didn't choose something unique.   So, what's your reasoning for temporary retiring them?  I'd love to hear.

I agree with VVATC – it is imperative that we preface the ceremony with a discussion that covers the proper retirement of a flag.  A few years ago, we did one and had a parent pitch a major fit in the middle of the ceremony.  We explained that this is the proper way to retire a flag and were informed exactly what we were full of (and it wasn’t respect!)  Now we do have the discussion beforehand and things are much smoother.

We let our 5th grade Webelos do the retirement at the last campout before they bridge – it makes it a special campout for them.  We have a Council trainer who lives across from a veteran who provides her with flags which she distributes.  I also noticed in September that the flags at our school were getting ragged so we asked the principal for them once she replaced them.  The new flags were already on order, so we were able to use the American flag at the last campout.  The Texas Flag Code actually contains a formal retirement ceremony, so when we retire that one, we can at least point to something official as support.

On the subject of Den numbers, we only have one den per grade.  We number ours so that the number corresponds to the year they will bridge.  My Bears will bridge in December, 2011, so we are Den 1, the Wolfs in December 2012 are Den 2, etc.

We temporarily retire the Webelos den names to promote diversity in the den naming. We  started to see the same names rolling every other year. With literally hundreds of patches available, we wanted to see more than just scorpions and phoenixes.  The dens are  unique by the time they get to Webelos,  their Den name should be unique.

How interesting it is that you mentioned Scorpions ……    That's exactly the name that was repeated.   Thanks for your viewpoint.   I think I'll share it with the other leaders.

You have that, kind of, for the US Flag as well.  United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, §176 (Respect for the flag), item (k):

The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

No specific retirement ceremony (script, do you disassemble the flags or not, etc.) is called out.  Anyone can hold a flag retirement, so long as it is done in a respectful and dignified way.

In the retirement ceremonies we do here, I read that part of the US Code before we actually retire the flags by having them "consumed by fire."  One other tip is to never say you're burning a flag, say you're retiring a flag by consuming them with fire or something along those lines.
