#211-Five Years Dead

If you’re looking for Scouting tips, this episode is not for you! It’s our five year anniversary and we talk about everything AHAW related, play the entire first show, have lots of laughs and explain some plans for the future. This is not a normal show and to those of you who are new, go back to #210 and wait for #212 next week when we get back to the normal stuff.

Thanks to everyone who got me to 5 years:

Justin – We did good stuff while we were together. I miss it, but I’m glad you kept going. Knowing someone’s got the entire rest of the Scouting planet covered works just fine for me.

Bob – There will always be a chair at my Roundtables for you. You were my anchor. And you are missed.

Steve - Good grief, I can’t believe some of the stuff you let me say to you! And you’re always laughing and never judge.

Jerry – THE Scouting Anchor. I’ve tied my line to you more than you will ever know. You are what Scouting is supposed to look like to me.

Shawn – The guy who’ll take me to the Scouting “Bar” and have a brew and talk about old comedies and good Scouting.

Kris – My longest Scouting "girlfriend". It feels like you’ve been here since the beginning. Big respect for you.

Shannon – I guess someone has to be the grown-up. You do it well. You keep me focused on what’s important.

Emily – Thanks for trying to keep me on a straight path. Sorry I keep failing… ok, I’m not really sorry. But don't stop trying.

Liberty - The perfect cheerleader, friend, confidant, partner. You make me remember life is not just about Scouting, but when it is, give it all every single time. You make my heart smile, even when my face won't.

All of the fans - It is overwhelming that anyone gets inspired/motivated/whatever by anything I do or say. It was the mission of the show to make Scouting better and I never thought I would do it once, let alone for five years. YOU ALL MAKE IT HAPPEN EVERY WEEK! When I want to quit, you all know what needs to be said. When I celebrate, you cheer with me. I will never be able to thank y'all enough.

OK, enough with the mushy thanks and breaking my arm patting myself on the back. Let’s get back to making our customers happy and getting some boys “Scouted Up”. Because, it’s just an hour a week, right?

Listening now (from Austria)!!  Congrats on 5 years.  Hope you're not going anywhere soon as I still have a few years in CS'ing.

- – – – – – – -

edited:  Okay, just finished.  Awwww, I could tell you got all emotional at the end.  I'm a new listener (probably been listening for about a year now, maybe a little less) and you really have no idea how you've helped me as a leader.  Here's what I get out of the show:

1.  You give lots of great ideas.  Even when you mention an idea that I've heard of before, you always seem to have a way to do it even better and with more excitement – for the boys!

2.  You keep it real.  You don't make being a Scouter sound all rosy all of the time.  You vent frustrations, but share victories too.  When I have a crappy meeting or day or event or weekend of Scouting, you help me feel normal – we all have ups and downs.

3.  You bring a great sense of humor to Scouting.  I distinctly remember you giggling about the very expensive 100th anniv. Scouting Knome on scoutstuff.org.  I was sitting there listening and giggling right along with you.  We all need laughter in our lives.

4.  You bring an INSANE amount of enthusiasm to your listeners.  Sometimes I'll catch myself thinking, "Oh man, I have to plan another meeting/activity badge/event.  Why did I get myself into this?"  But then I listen to you talk about your plans for Blue and Gold or pie-throwing or a pack meeting and your enthusiasm bleeds right through the internet and gets me fired up to tackle whatever Scouting obligations that I have with similar enthusiasm.

5.  You drive this idea home:  It's all about the boys – as long as they are having fun, that's all that matters.   We had a Webelos den meeting today and I decided to share a few jokes with the boys.  I was really just sharing the jokes because they went along with our theme/project – the Webelos Craftsmanship AB.  Well, my joke telling spun into a joke-telling extravaganza.  The boys were howling.  Initially, I was thinking, "Man, these jokes are so dumb, why are they enjoying this so much?"  But these kids were just going nuts sharing jokes.   I had to step back for a second and remind myself who I was working with – 9 year old BOYS.  Of course they were having a blast – we were just being silly.   You've made it clear that it doesn't take much to make these kids happy.

I could go on.  I totally forget how I even stumbled upon the podcast, but I am so glad that I did.  Keep up the good work – you are serving the Scouting community (WORLDWIDE!) better than you'll ever realize.

Happy Birthday Chris.  You bring so much fun and information about Scouting to your listeners.  Let us know when you go to National Camp School.  I thought it was the most intense weekend I've ever experienced.

Keep up the great work.

A very fun show and it was interesting to hear show number 1.

I've been listening to the podcast for over 18 months now and I find the show (as with all the PTC shows) interesting as they give me a different perspective on Scouting.

On the 2/3 occasions I have listened live, I've always been impressed how welcoming Chris and the chatroom are to 'newbies', especially when they are idiot Brits listening at 3am!

So Chris, long may you continue with the show with your obvious enthusiasm for the BSA's Cub programme and spreading the word about Scouting.

Just one request, any chance of it being on a little earlier? Wink

Chris, YOU ROCK!!! I'm happy to hold the title of "longest girlfriend"!!! You've helped me so much and helped me "take it to the next level" with the MISS show and everything else I do! Some would even say you fed my addiction. I look forward to standing beside you and at the same time following your lead.

Thank you for EVERYTHING you've done!!!

I'm such a newbie, and yet still so honored to be a part of all of the NBC-PTC excitement! Who knew that 9 months ago when I wandered into iTunes to find a podcast to help get me going with scouting, I'd end up on this path.  Thank you.

I'm leaving if Leno takes over.  Don't care for him much.

Hey Chris – Happy belated birthday.  Two years ago next week I googled "scout podcast" in a desparate attempt to find a way to take my Den meetings to the next level.  I knew there was one but didn’t know how to get there.   AHAW came up and I thought, "What the heck?  I’ll give it a try."  Since then, there are nine boys in my Den who have benefitted directly.  I have also found myself in the role of mentor to our Tiger leader, so there is another ten.  The intangible is this:  one of my parents is ACM and has another son coming up in a few years.  Since he and the Tiger DL have seen what the program can be, I am already seeing changes in a Pack that was pretty stagnant when my older son went through.  Nothing I did specifically – other than bring my game up a notch.  I doubt I’ll evern reach the level you and some of the others are at, but not for a lack of trying.

Since finding AHAW, I have branched out to listen to all the PTC shows, and I have been using some of what I learn at the Troop level.  There’s another 30 kids impacted.

I enjoy the shows because, as has been mentioned above, you vent about failures and what-ifs and celebrate the wins.  You acknowledging the not-so-good times is what has kept me focused when I have those times because it reminds me that those times happen and you have to keep on trucking.  Your zanyness keeps us going strong and I look forward to the next year.
