This is not the first article that I have read with adverse views in reference to the BSA's stance on religion and homosexuality, but all of these articles and most of the comments seems to have the same position…"BSA is wrong and they should change their policies."
As far as the position on homosexuality goes, there is no way that the BSA could change this policy, even if they thought they should. They know that if they started allowing homosexual leaders within the ranks, membership would plummit…right, wrong, or indifferent, the numbers would nosedive and we know it's all amount the numbers.
As far as the religion argument, I have to disagree with the premise of the argument based on what I have seen in my short five years in Scouting. It's not that I think Atheists shouldn't be allowed to join Scouts. Actually, I think they should be allowed. Why? Because the BSA has such a willy nilly stance on God. I don't know what unit the writer had visited, but I haven't seen a unit, especially not mine, that pushes religious views. I really wish that God, specifically Christianity, was emphasized more. BSA's policy that you have to have a belief in God is really that you have to have a belief in a god. Any one will do, all faiths are equal. If that is the case why not allow Atheists to join and have faith in nothing or themselves or whatever.
