New BSA Best Practices Web Portal

I would like to relate to you the creation of the new BSA Best Practices Web
Portal. This project was developed under the leadership of Bob Sadock, the Vice
President for Marketing of the Northeast Region and his Marketing Committee with
the important support of Darin Kinn of the National office.

The portal is an extremely important breakthrough and represents the new way of
thinking on behalf of the BSA. In the past, "Best Practices" were handed down
at Roundtables and meetings first in the form of stacks of paper and then on CD.
There was no way for anyone to really say "we tried that but found a better
alternative" or that "we tried it and it worked but don't forget to . . . ."The
new system will allow ordinary red jacket Scouters of every level of the program
to place their best practices on this new portal for the purpose of sharing and
to allowing others to comment and help not only refine the concept but also to
rate it, similar to the way product websites allow consumer ratings. The portal
will allow you to link to your program, put in key words to assist in searching,
link to unit, Council, Area, and Regional committees, and to Journey to
Excellence milestones.

Most importantly, this is open to any registered Scouter and is not a web site
that is filtered.

Consider it in Beta mode now, but you can test it out.

You can get to the BSA Best Practices Web Portal via http://www.myscouting.org (see
left panel once logged in)

The new web portal is pretty neat, I already submitted one!

I think it has some bugs to work out or will be a learning curve for some. One "best practice" entry shows up about a dozen times. Not sure if this person posted it that many times or if the fact that it is cross-category causes it to show up that many times even when doing a view of every entry overall.

Thanks so much for pointing this out.  I'll definitely be watching what sort of content arrives, hopefully will supply some as well.  The ability to collaborate on a national scale is awesome – hopefully it won't become overwhelming.

I like the idea. I hate the name. There has to be a better name than 'Best Practices' web portal especially if there may be a diverse set of ideas being shared.

"Mostly Good Practices" or "The Best Practices we could come up with"

It's a corporate term on a website that was developed by corporate minded people.  I'm more interested in the content than the name. Lets just hope that people actually use it and start filling it in.

I'm also curious to how much moderating there is. Can anyone post something and it goes up right away? I can see the potential for people to put up their great idea, only to have it be against BSA policies in some way, be it just a gray area, or outright unsafe.  Are these posts being vetted before they are put up for all to see?

While I'm sure they're being moderated in some way, the posts are instantly available from what I can tell (the one I posted a couple days ago was immediately showing up in the searches).

Disclaimer on the front page of the portal:

“The purpose of this portal is to assist the organization in sharing best practice examples. The content contained herein is not endorsed by the Boy Scouts of America as corporate policy. It is intended solely for the use of members as an idea-sharing portal.”

There's also a "Gold Seal" designation which I am not quite clear on what that means since there's no real FAQ for the portal yet. Maybe that means it has a large amount of positive feedback, or maybe it means it has been endorsed by the BSA – not sure.

But truthfully there's always going to be some know-it-all Scouter who will be fast to point out when an idea is violating established national policies or the Guide to Safe Scouting, etc.

My bad on the triple-post, but I also noticed that there is no way for an author to edit their post once it has been submitted. I'm hoping they'll fix this as well. Beyond just being able to fix a typo or correct poor formatting or grammar, as a unit continues to perform this practice there are tweaks or embellishments that can be added.

I suppose that can be done in the comments but it would be better to have the ability to edit the post I think.

I was wondering about that, Scott… poking at it, I couldn't find a way to edit something posted.  That would be really odd if you can't do it – would be highly inefficient if they expect you to correct and repost.

I checked in on this the other day when I was getting on myscouting to look at how I will have to enter Roundtable attendance in the UTVS, and it doesn't look like there is much traffic yet.
