Durring registration for a District Pinewood Derby race, a car is disqualified at registration for spongey wheels.  The racer is allowed to race but is told that his time will not count tword trophies.  The car is placed in the race but the timer is not notified of the disqualification.  The race is run and the disqualified car has the fastest time and is awarded the trophy for first place.  No one catches the fact that the car was earlier disqualified.  The boy and his parent do not admit to being disqualified and take home the trophy as well as a trophy for best paint.  Later that night his Den leader and Cubmaster are told of the good news by a race official, at which time they relay to the official that the boy paid $85.00 online for the car and had nothing to do with building, modifying or painting the car.  If you were the race official, what would you do?

Let them keep the trophy and bump the runner-ups up a spot. Get some new trophies, and go to their houses or invite them to RT and distribute them…or better yet, go to their pack meetings. The 1st place "illegal" car gets NO recognition. I know in our district, there are pictures and congratulations…don't use any of them for the cheater.

The illegal car that took first, well, let them keep their trophies…you won't see them anymore, and the family knows that what they did was wrong. That's all they want, is a trophy. Does it matter? no…it really doesn't.

I know that there are a lot of scouters out there who have "earned" the Silver Beaver, but don't deserve to wear it…they still do, but they also have that stigma of "you wear it, but don't deserve it"….

Those are my thoughts…

Oh, by the way, our district did away with district races due to this very thing…one judge put the whole district derby's integrity on the line with one bad call that gave his son a trophy, and made the more deserving scout lose out…it was another adult with their own agenda that doesn't really care about the scouts or anyone else….

Once again, my thoughts only…
