There are 1.1 million Volunteers that keep the Scouting program in America moving. 1.1 million!
Where are they? I have to believe that of the 1.1 million at least half of the them are passionate about Scouting in some form or another. I have to believe that of that half a million, some of them, at least a quarter of them pay attention to trends, updates, and program helps to make their Scouting experience and the experience of the young men and women better.
So where are they?
Why is that a TV show like Lost that has 21 active podcasts on itunes gets thousands of downloads and a huge following?
YET…. an organization that is the best thing in a young mans life, has the best group of people (adults) helping it, has a perfect set of values, and a limited amount of online presents.. limited enough that you really don't have to look hard to find it.. gets nothing by way of following and certainly limited activity among its niche population.
I would think that given the fact that there are FREE podcasts out there, a good forum, and smaller population, that at least that group would actively participate in it.
Maybe it's just me.
Now this is not written in frustration.. I really wonder where they are? And why they are not here.
1.1 million… ok.. call it 250,000 that really get it.
Where are they?
Have a Great Scouting Day.. to all of you that get it.

I can postulate a few reasons.
1. Not all scouters are net savvy
2. Networking happens a lot at the local/district/council level and people don't always think about the scouting as a national thing
3. Lack of advertisements. In fact you know what, I think I'm going to go plug it on facebook right now!
4. Lack of codecs, knowledge to listen online.
I can tell you one thing that might help is if the live programs had their times listed somewhere in plain text. I've looked a few times on the site and couldn't find it.
Only thing I can think to do is spread the word. Maybe we need some PTC media patches you can wear as your optional patch or something LOL.

Maybe the volunteers are busy – you know – volunteering? Too busy to fuss with podcasting (listening or recording.) :)

1. Technical disposition of the audience (Scouters) may be one factor. While I'm a self-affirmed geek and border on obsession of integrating tech into everything a lot of Scouters I've met are quite the opposite (so guess who they call when their computer is botched from "something the kids must have done").
2. Different platforms are dividing the audience – Facebook seems to have the most attention right now (however I particularly have a religious aversion to FB), Twitter for the proud and witty, LinkedIn for the more business end of things, Scouts-L for the angry misers, and myscouting for those who really want to believe in a solid offering from national.
3. Based on other anecdotes I've heard I wonder how much lying using numbers (marketing) is happening and how accurate the 1.1 mil. is. How many charters are there that have members listed to fill the required blank instead of being there to fulfill the promise of Scouting?
All I know is this is my 5th year as listener/forum member at PTC and it's been the best resource across the board for my Scouting career.
If you're looking to grow the numbers what about a "best of" CD with some of the more timeless shows from each group; ie: Leaders Campfire-ADD, SMM-Bullying, Steve/Buttons, etc. Obviously producing those costs $ as would shipping them to all the dedicated followers who would gladly distribute them at roundtables, etc.
