Hello,
I wanted to introduce myself to the group. My "handle" will be Dakota_Scouter hailing from South Dakota. My experience in Scouting is as follows:
As a Youth – I made it through Bear cubs as a youth. The Scout Master in my hometown was not on my "friendly" list, so when Webelos roled around I was done. I regret that decsion just about every day of my adult life.
As a volunteer – I volunteered at our Church as an Assistant Scoutmaster with the Boy Scout Troop for 4 years. When I began my volunteer work with the Troop, my son was 2. I had no other boys in the program. I met with the Scoutmaster (of the time), explained that I simply wanted to help out if possible, and was welcomed into the Troop. After passing a few non-traditional tests (from parents – Who I'm sure were wondering what I was up to), I served as an Assitant Scoutmaster as well as an Assistant Venture Crew Advisor. I maintained a fully trained Tenure as well as achieved my Woodbadge beads while helping the Troop (C-11-07 Bobwhite). Not only did I attend Summer camp with the troop regularly, as well as monthly campouts, I also served as a Merit Badge counselor from time to time. However, my proudest moment in Boy Scouting (thus far) was of our Venture Crew's goal of becoming SCUBA certified and attending Sea Base (in the Florida Keys) as a diving crew. What a great experience!
As a Parent – Last year (2009-2010 Season) my son was Cub Scout age. I "retired" from the Boy Scout Troop, backed up and was the Tiger Den leader for his Den. I am currently in position to be the Assistant Cubmaster of our Pack, with the plan to become the new Cubmaster for the 2011-2012 scouting season. I couldn't be more excited!
That's my resume… No knots, a couple beads and whole pack full of memories!
Your Brother in Scouting,
Dorin Hemmelman

Welcome to the crew… It'll be interesting to hear your perspective going from Boy Scouts to Cubs as traditionally it's the inverse.

Wow! Welcome! Talk about doing things in an exciting order, right? You started out running then went back to learn how to crawl?
Teasing. :)
Your son is lucky to have such an experienced "Scout Dad" – now does he get to teach you how to be a kid again?

Miss Liberty – Yes, my son is showing me how to be a kid, and I'm loving it! Many of the Boy Scouts were of the age where it's "Not Cool" to have fun the way Scouts sometimes do. Cub Scouts on the other hand, go crazy and love it!
