Okay, so bear with me on this one… Chris & I have talked several times about the fact that the pockets are empty but there's plenty of elbow grease to go around when it comes to doing stuff so the scout can go to camp or on some trip. Most recently I got suckered into being chef for a cub camp weekend in exchange for my son being able to attend. Sweet deal!
Anyway, it struck me that this might actually BE something…. (buckle your seatbelts) What if we were to use similar motivation to get parents to step up & volunteer??? Maybe set up a “Scout Bucks” sort of system. If mom or dad shows up to an event and helps run it they get x amount in scout bucks. If they organize and/or run an event, they qualify for more. They volunteer to be a DL or ADL (where there's a need) they get another amount….contingent on the success of the den of course. Oh, and they get some if they go to trainings!!!! (like that one, Chris???)
It would take some careful tracking and I personally would want a “committee” of atleast 3 to approve & set the rules and then approve the time investments, but it might just be the motivation these parents need. The scout bucks would of course only be good towards summer camp or other scout events. And of course, it would depend on the financial stability of the Pack.
But maybe this would be a multi-sided program that would not only increase the involvement of the parents but also help promote summer camp (a SERIOUS issue in our area). It might also put the financially challenged folks more at ease because they can pay with sweat equity instead of non-existant greenbacks.
I personally see this as something our Pack could financially handle. What problems do you see with it? Does it not jive with some obscure rule out there?? General opinions??
