So are any of you guys out there patch collectors? I'm kind of new back into it and I was wondering if there were any more of you out there who collect, and what specifically you look for.
I'm trying to put together a historical collection on the council that used to be HQ'ed out of my hometown, Middletown Area Council (which later became known as Mound Builders Area Council). I was in Mound Builders as a youth until they were merged with Dan Beard Council in 1985. So what I collect is:
- Mound Builders Area Council CSP's, JSP's, RWS & Middletown Ohio Community Strips (the last two in all color combos)
- Camp Hook (the camp that serviced MBAC from 1926 until 1991) patches
- MBAC Klondike Derby Patches
- MBAC Activity Patches for other events (camporees, etc.)
- OA Lodge Nachenum 145 items (after the merger, Dan Beard Council had Ku-ni-eh 462 and incorporated the two to become Ku-ni-eh 145 – I'm only looking for the Nachenum 145 stuff, not the Ku-ni-eh.)
- Dan Beard Council CSP's, JSP's, RWS and Community Strips (the last two in all color combos)
What about you guys? Do you collect Scouting stuff (other than paperwork)? If so, what?

You've got my curiosity up… What's the story behind the “mound builders” name?

We have several sites in our council area that were once inhabited by the Hopewell/Adena/Fort Ancient cultures of Native American Indians, a thousand or more years ago. They built earthen mounds for many reasons. As burial mounds for the dead, as walls for protection, for other unknown reasons and also for astronomical reasons – they acted as calendars to mark seasons for planting crops, etc. This culture was actually all over the Ohio valley. The most notable site in the council was Fort Ancient, which is now a part of our district (after our council got sucked into Dan Beard in 1985, it was its own district named at different times Mound Builders, Fort Ancient and now Hopewell).

Some information from Wikipedia. There is actually at least one known mound out at Camp Hook (the boy scout camp that operated for Mound Builders and then Dan Beard Council from 1926-1991, and was sold to the local metroparks system in 1997).

I never really got into collecting patches unless I earned them, but I for some reason do like collecting any kind of Scouting books that are in English ;)

I found what could possibly be a good site for listing your needs for any scouting collectible (patches, books, etc.). needslist.com. Found it actually from the Boy Scout Store website that is one of the newer advertisers here on PTC – there was a banner on that website about the needslist website. Looks to be operated by the same people.
But when I try and go there Firefox tells me that it is a suspected attack site and if you actually do get into the site all the scripting takes forever and tries to pull from multiple .ru websites, so I think maybe the site got infected or something. That's too bad, because it looks like it would be a good place for people who collect scouting memoribilia to post the stuff they're looking for and find people to trade away the extra stuff they have.

I personally am not into trading or collecting other than the stuff that I participate in. But….my Webelos went camping (Brotherhood actually) with a Troop that is HEAVILLY into collecting/trading. The SM had brought baggies full of his "extras" that he gave to the New Scouts & Webs that were there to get them going. My older son (now Star) also tagged along and of the 2 of them, he got the biggest kick out of it.
HOWEVER, while cleaning out the truck the other night….I found his bag of badges. I guess the enjoyment was short lived.
I DO think it's a neat hobby and I'd love to help anyone who needs stuff from Central New York!!! The one thing that I did notice is, like Scott, you need to decide on a specific type or theme of badges or it can get MEGA out of control!!! Most of the folks at the troop do CSP.

Absolutely on the need to specialize. And even then it can be a daunting task. For instance if you were to only want to collect patches from OA Lodge 145 Kun-i-eh, that alone is easily 100's of patches.
Choose one for a reason that makes sense to you. I chose Mound Builders Council / Camp Hook / Nachenum 145 because of the historical value to me that these were from a council that used to be HQ'ed from my hometown, and also that I was a youth in that council (if only for a short while).

After my first trip to Philmont in 1984 I began collecting council strips and OA lodge patches. After attending the Jamboree in 2001 I added 2001 Jamboree Patches to the collection.
At least the patch collection does not take up as much room as the Scouting book collections I have.
