OK, somebody please tell me that these characters are just a very late April Fools Day joke from the BSA Licensing folks. If this isn't a joke, then there are some marketing folks that need to be fired immediately.
If you haven't seen them, here are a couple of links:

Wow, pathetic !

Maybe I'm missing the context, but what are you getting at?

The BSA Licensing hype machine has been going full throttle regarding the announcementsw that they'll be making this week at the Licensing EXPO. The first item that comes out are two generic cartoon kids and a poorly drawn dog with a robotic leg? Sorry, but I was expecting something much cooler than this.
After the earlier successeses from National (Rose Bowl parade float, Indy car, UP locomotive), I thought that they would start out with a big bang, not a fizzle.
Maybe, somebody can help me understand who would want to license these three characters.

In the realm of the BSA, and no, I am not bashing, I can see Plug…he's a techno-scout, or maybe that is what he will be purported to be. I can see Plug as someone who some scouts may be able to relate to.
Axel, although the name doesn't make too much sense, I see him as another type of adventurer, a dreamer.
Able, I see that as opposed to creating a human with a robotic leg, they use an animal…
In all, I see the 3 characters as characters for the 21st century.
Personally, I will wait to pass judgement…I am sure that someone made the same comments about PeeWee Harris and Gus…

Per the BSA Licensing web site, these characters are aimed at 4 – 7 year old kids. They're hoping to license these characters for apparel, packs & bags, plush toys, games, etc. How may pre-school / kindergarten age kids do you see carrying a Plug / Axel / Abel backpack or wearing an Abel t-shirt?

If these characters are aimed at pre-Scouts, it makes me wonder if BSA is positioning these to use in the Lion program. Hmmm…

A stronger "launch" more consistent with the grandeur of the parade float, race car, etc. would be to have a short cartoon available already – a 5 minute or so video introducing the youngest of recruits to the Scouting program and how these character represent those aspects of Scouting.. personally I'd rather they be more identifiable as Scouts – not full uniform but a cap or something.

I talked to the retention professional at NYLT last night he thinks that they may be targeting the Learning for Life youth which includes the target audience range. While LFL and BSA are two different organizations, They run by the same head. No one has said that BSA licensing is not in charge of licensing for LFL too.

So, it's been nearly two months since the big announcement about these characters. Has anyone seen a mention of them since the rollout?

I have not, but I'll keep an eye out for them when I visit Jambo on Saturday.
I was on the Facebook page for them. It certainly seems like they are Boy Scout related and not Learning for Life.

I couldn't determine a link to LFL or the BSA from the facebook page. I still think that based on the target audience they are either LFL or trying to market the BSA to pre cub-scouts. If they are after Pre-Cub Scouts, I think the first grade starting age would disenfranchise the young boys. Interesting to hear they recieved calls for an animated series.
Maybe Arvada Can pull out some news while he visits Philmont next week.
