Registration Fee Increase

This fall the Girl Scouts will be increasing their annual registration to $12.  I saw that and thought, "Dang."  Though I wasn't terribly suprised since generally just about everything in Girl Scouts (except the uniform) costs more than Boy Scouts.  Then I just read this article:

http://www.scoutingnews.org/20…..-increase/

BSA is raising registration fees from $10 to $15 annually, effective January 1, 2010.  So that means that for those of us who get all the recharter paperwork done in November and December for a 1/1 official charter date, the cost for registration just went up 50%.

This is sub-optimal to me, if for no other reason than my unit completely re-did the way we finance last year which resulted in our annual fees going from $45 including Boy's Life to $60 ($72 if you want Boy's Life).  I am loathe to then turn around the very next year and tack on an additional $5 increase.  Looks like I don't have a choice in the matter.

It's a tough time to have back to back increases, but it's still cheaper than many sports programs. And you get skills that last a lifetime.

Do you allow any popcorn sales to cover the annual fee? Maybe you could bundle it so that selling a certain level of popcorn reduces your fee,  or just reduces this year's increase?

Maybe this year's increase is to pay for the masseuses at National? Laugh

We do individual scout accounts.  So 100% of the commission earned by that boy is earmarked solely for his use for registration, boys life, annual pack fee, extra activity fees not covered in pack fee, awards not covered by the pack fee (like beltloops), anything from the scout shop, summercamp, etc…

I do not see this as a big deal.  $5 is not that bad given what you pay for other youth activities.

In regard to unit financing and rechartering.. its just an increase.  Nothing more.  My Troop does the Individual Scout accounts also.  The Scout pays his way through the Scouting year.  Every thing we do and spend money on is budgeted and presented annually.  The dues in our Troop is $200 a year.  And we never ask for another penny (except for the FOS campaign).  We have never had anyone turn away from our unit because the dues.

Here is what they get for their $200:

Registration

Boy's Life (no choice..they all get it)

Patches (advancements etc)

Camping- their moeny pays for any camping fees.

Food- Patrols are given a fixed amount to budget for each months camp out.

Canoes, Climbing gear, rentals, etc.

Their dues help with any administrative supplies, decorations, and special awards for CoH's.

So the bang for the buck it there and a promise to never nickle and dime the parents to death.

So $5 increase in registration… no that big a deal.  I see more bang for my buck there too… especially with the fact that I just spent well over $200 in Football gear, sign ups etc. for my youngest son to play this season.  And to be honest.. I have no idea where that money goes.

$5 isn't at all bad when  you think that's an additional five dollars – per year.  Fourty-two cents per month?  I think I can handle that.

Personally, I'd rather see BSA bump it up to $15 all at once rather than making it $11 this year, $12 next year, $13 the year after, etc.

I thought it was just jumping straight to $15 effective 1/1/2010.

Scott,

It is jumping straight to $15.  What Liberty is saying is that she would rather see a single jump to $15 than a series of $1 increase.

Yeah, I figured it out.  Brain wasn't at 100% this morning. :)

While I would love to just jump in and say that our annual ee is $200 and covers everything, I'd probably lose about 80% of my pack.  A $5 a year increase is a pretty big deal for many of my families.

Of course, this is Middletown where we are #10 on the Forbes list of fastest dying cities with a 22% poverty rate as of 2007 (surely has gone up since then) and only a 12.2% rate of residents with a bachelor's degree.  I think the percentage without a high school diploma or equivalent is over 33%, even.  Selling adults on anything in this place is tough, especially on them paying more money.

Our parents have to pay a similar fee which goes to the Scout Association, our County and our District and is currently £25 per person per year (approx $42). We do have at least three families each with three members of the Group, so if a family has 2 or more kids with us, the Group discounts them so they only pay £20 per person.

Our area is not a particularly affluent one, especially in the current economic situation and we as a Group a happy to help out where necessary. We just make up the money through our various fundraising activites. It works for us.
