Selling Items at a Roundtable

One of my RT commissioners approached me about the possibility of purchasing items at the Scout Shop (at a discount) and then reselling them (at or below list price) at our roundtables.  Perhaps other Scouting-related items might be available, but for now the plan was to start with Scout Store stuff.  The profits would be used to cover roundtable expenses (supplies, food, give-aways, etc.).  Apparently, the manager of our Scout Store is OK with this proposal.

I'm seeing flashing red lights about this proposal (bookkeeping, liability, competing against the BSA, distracting folks from the actual roundtable, tax collection, etc.).  It also feels like it's in conflict with the guidelines on the back of the Unit Money-Earning Application.  Do any of your districts allow product sales at roundtables?

Our Scout Shop actually comes to a few Round Tables per year and sets up a mobile shop.

I don't have a problem with it.

Jerry, I'm assuming that all of the sales are performed by the Scout Shop folks.  We do a similar thing at a couple of council-wide events.  Do you know if the profits from your RT sales go back to the Scout Shop or the district?

Oh it all goes to the Scout Shop of course.

I have not seen anyone else sell anything sold at RT.

The Scout shop rarely does discounts stuff or specials locally.  The only two that I have seen are for Summer Camp staffers.. they get a "Green card" that allows Summer camp staffers discounts on uniforms and other stuff they need for camp.

The other is for Jamboree.  They do a similar sale.. a one time deal to allow Jamboree participants a shot at getting uniform items etc for Jamboree at a discount.

Putting on my day job hat and addressing an issue I have seen in PTO's:

I don't know the rules in your state, but you would probably need a sales tax id and would need to collect and remit sales tax.  Even the Scout Shop has to do this, so I don't see an out in this situation.

The headache and hassle probably exceed what you might be able to make.

Another potential headache is turning your Roundtable into a Mini Scout Shop when people begin to request specific items.

Plus, when other Districts catch on to this, then the shop is going to start losing traffic, and eventually, losing money.

Besides, if you have such an abundance or RT staff to allow you to also run a Scout Store on the side, maybe their time could be better served adding something to the Roundtable Program.

(I hope that last part doesn't sound snarky. Not my intention.)

I think this is one of those "looks good on paper" ideas.

There's actually a provision written into this (maybe only in my council?) for having items available to purchase from the Scout Shop at Roundtables and/or Training sessions.

My understanding is that council can do it, but one of the professionals has to sign everything out and back in and they're responsible for it all.  Therefore I am not suprised that it doesn't ever happen (at least in my district).

I think our fall Cub-o-Ree overnighter when we have a large percentage of new boys attending is a great time to have a shop set up with about 10 items:

Tiger Handbook
Wolf Hankbook
Bear Handbook
Webelos Handbook
Den Leaders Handbook
Webelos Den Leaders Handbook
Leaders How-To Book
Leaders Guide Book
Sports & Academics (Beltloop) Handbook
Program Helps

I push this every year.  Sadly, our DE and DD apparantly don't want to be responsible for the inventory so they nix it every year.

I could really use some creative thinking to help me see the positive side of my RT Commissioner's proposal.  My immediate gut reaction is a resounding 'NO', but I'd like to to be able to see the other side of the coin.

Help me PTC'ers.  You're my only hope!  (apologies to Princess Leah)

One positive aspect of the idea is that it might attract folks that can't make it to the scout shop during regular business hours to your RT.  Of course, if this is the draw, what you might do is make arrangements for folks to order stuff from the shop and have the shop send it along with the DE or someone to the RT.  That way you aren't carrying random stuff but rather the stuff folks need and you KNOW that someone will take it off your hands.

One other positive is that if you were to pick out some of the more novel stuff to sell, it might increase sales for your shop.  It doesn't affect your district in any way, but it does help out the big picture.  And who knows, you might find some REALLY useful tool, gadget, game that a specific unit just HAS to have!

Generally, I'd say it's one big pain in the butt, but you asked for positives so there you are.
