Can you name the three current high adventure bases of the Boy Scouts of America? Everyone can name Philmont Scout Ranch. Most people know about the Florida Sea Base. But did you know there is also a high adventure base in Minnesota? Yes there is! It is the Northern Tier High Adventure base, and it is the subject of this episode of Around The Scouting Campfire.
Scoutmaster Steve begins the show with information about the Northern Tier program. He tells us a little about a 2002 trip his troop took through the Charles Sommers Canoe base. Mike Linnemann, one of the Boy Scouts who attended the trip, shares a poem written by the crew members. Buttons has some canoe jokes for us before he shares some quotes by Lord Baden-Powell. The show ends with a scoutmaster minute about being thrifty.

Steve,
My son, a second year Webelos Scout, and I LOVE to listen to Around the Scouting Campfire! I always save the episodes for when he and I are driving somewhere and surprise him with it. We really like Buttons and the variety show feel of your podcast. I…we…look forward to listening to your latest episode!
Keep up the GREAT work!

Please, if you are going to do a story on a program, please pronounce the program name correctly. Okpik is pronounced OOk' pick.

My son, his friend and myself got to tag along with another troop to the Rogert's Atikokan Base in 2008. It was a great trip. (except for the "skeeters") It really challenged everyone. We had to do a midlake "t" rescue 15-20 mph winds,1-2 foot swells and 50+ degree water. We had three scouts in the early stages of hypothermia. Sitting in an aluminum canoe in a cold downpour in 50+ degree water. Yet when asked no one would have not gone. My son's friend was so inspired by the trip he did Seabase last year, and Philmont this summer. In a scouts words, "Seabase was a vacation, Philmont was physically demanding but Northern Tier required toughness"

My trip to Northern Tier was not as "bad" as yours, but it still had its challenges, and it was still a great time. I am glad your boys enjoyed it.
