Hi All,
Looks like this will kick things off for this topic. Our Troop is planning a trip to Gettysburg over the Columbus day weekend. 3 Days of doing the heratage trail and touring the battlefields, and town. I will keep you up to date as we work this trip.

Gettysburg is Fantastic! I have been many times. It is a fascinating trip for Scouts. May I suggest a few things to make the trip worth while.
First, have the Scouts watch the movie Gettysburg before you go, get a bunch of pop corn and make it a movie night. When they get to the actual place they will remember places they see in the movie (a lot was filmed on location). It will give them a bigger appreciation for size and events on land. Other wise it could end up a bunch of Scouts wandering through fields.
Second, if you get the chance read the book Gettysburg or at least Killer Angles by the author Michael Shaara. That is what the movie was based on. It is a fantastic read, and will give you a little more to talk about on your trip.
and Finally, if you can get a park ranger to hang out with you while on the Trip.. Priceless. They know a ton and are always glad to share.
Hope you guys have a great time. We are taking our Jamboree contingent to Gettysburg next summer… I can't wait.

I remember hitting Gettysburg during my high school senior trip. We were on one of those big tour buses so on the way they screened the film for us. I had already seen it but I agree that without some historical background ahead of time some of the meaning and history can get lost on the boys.

Thanks for the tips Jerry and SMWalker. I have been to Gettysburg 3 times (once as a scout wandering the fields) and most of the things you talk about we will be doing. I have the DVD of the movie and we are planning a movie night. And I have read the Killer Angels and I have the audio book on my iPod. Tomorrow (July 3) is the 146th anniversary of Pickets Charge.
I also have the driving tour CD of the battlefields. I think we may listen to that on the way there. There is also the new visitor's center to check out.
We will not be camping on the battlefield but will be in a cabin at a local scout camp.
I'll post more as we plan it out.

Please keep us up to date! I love Gettysburg and have not been there since 1979 when my family biked the battleground. I am planning a small trip there with some Scouts next October!
Try this out for some extra Scouting fun… http://www.yaac-bsa.org/filest…..burg-1.htm

Tom,
Would you be camping @ Camp Tuckahoe (real close to the Appalachian Trail) and fairly close to Gettysburg, or are you going to be staying at Camp Conewago (one of the oldest Scout camps in the US)?

Both are in my council, as well as Gettysburg.
Hope that you all have a wonderful time.

OGO,
We'll be at Tuckahoe. The troop has stayed at Conewago in the past, but they were already booked for the weekend we're going.
Other new is that we are booked into the new visitor center and all it has to offer. We're also going to visit Ike's homestead.

This is the weekend! All the reservations are set. The weather looks good. The boys are ready. We did show the movie the last two troop meeting ( it's long). We even had Johny Reb and Billy Yank re-enactors at the last meeting. The scouts got to see equipment from the era, and they (the re-enactors) fired their wepons.
We leave Friday night and spend Saturday & Sunday hiking the battlefields. Saturday night we are doing one of the many ghost tours in town.
Monday is Ike's place and then back home.
I hope to be able to Tweet from the trip and post picts too. If you want you can follow us @ScouterTom on Twitter.

TRIP REPORT
WOW! What a trip. We got back Monday night after a jam packed 3 1/2 days in Gettysburg Penn. We had 13 scouts and 4 adult leaders on the trip. We saw at least 10 other troops in town while we were there.
We left CT Friday night and got to BSA Camp Tuckahoe about 11 PM. It was a long drive for the adults.
The camp is about a half hour from Gettysburg and was not hard to find. We stayed in a cabin which was a typical camp cabin with electric, stove, fridge and wood stove for heat.
Saturday we headed south to the battlefields and first stopped in the brand new visitor's center. The boys were wowed by the newly restored Cyclorama. We spent the morning here and headed out on the first hike – the Johnny Reb Trail. This hike took most of the afternoon and covered about 5 miles. It includes the National Cemetery and the Culp’s Hill area.
We then did Dinner at “General Pickett's Buffet” right next to the battlefield. We had reservations for 5 which got us out of there just as the place was getting packed for dinner. The food was good and the boys filled up. Most of the leaders commented that they lost money on us .
We then did one of the many ghost walks of Gettysburg. Let’s just say it didn’t scare any of the boys, and I think it left the adults a bit disappointed. Good stories, just nothing hair raising. The hike ended at 8:30 which left us time to drive part of the battlefield at night and we stopped at the “High Water Mark of the Confederacy”. Lots of other ghost hunters out this October night, but nothing seen … or was there????
Sunday was dedicated to the 10 mile Billy Yank trail. A 10 mile jaunt from the visitor’s center to the Peach Orchard, the Wheatfield, Devil’s Den, Little Round Top, the Confederate’s line, then up Pickett’s Charge to “The Angle”. This is a good hike with the only hill being Little Round Top. There’s a lot to see and learn on this hike, with the boys charging up the rise at the end. Then back to the cabin for dinner and some down time.
Monday saw us packing up and heading back down to Gettysburg to tour the Eisenhower Historic Site. This is the home that Ike retired to after being President. This is a self guided tour and shows a very nice 1950’s – 60’s style farm house and grounds. Not the highlight but nice.
Then we had the long ride home.

This would be my first big trip I will be heading solo….

Bryan,
Planning for the trip takes some doing. First off is where to stay and when. There is an option for Scout units to camp on the Battlefield. This is done though a lottery in January & Feburary of that year. You can find info on the park's website. The local council also has two camps about 30 minutes from town. We stayed in a cabin at Camp Tuckahoe and enjoyed it, the little bit were were there. These can book up fast for popular weekend so pre-planning is a must. There are also several private campgrounds in the area.
The York-Adams Council is responsible for the hike guides and the awards. Gettysburg is a 5 hour drive for us so we ended up staying for 3 days. You really do need at least 2 full days in town to do all the activities for the award. Two major hikes (6 – 10 miles), in town, the vistor center and the Eisenhower National Historic Site.
I suggest you start with the visitor center. This is brand new in 2008 and is NOTHING like the old one. I also suggest going to the Cyclorama (also newly updated!). These are both ticketed events and worth it for the boys to get a feel for the space.
We also did a Ghost walk that did not impress me, but maybe it was the tour. We did have time after the tour for hitting the battlefield at night. THAT was something else. Just the feeling of history can be overwhelming at times.
We did eat one meal in town. At "General Picketts All You Can Eat Buffet". Not bad food and a good way to fill up hungry scouts.
The Eisenhower tour (also ticketed) has nothing to do with the Civil war and as most of the boys haveing no idea who he was it was kind of flat.

Thanks Tom, we live in Indianapolis so about 8 hours and plan on going our fall break Wed to Sun so that should give us enough time there (t-f-s). I thought about camping on the battlefield but am not sure given the borderline weather. How miserable it would be if cold and rainy all weekend and only a small tent to cover you. I am looking at the cabins (big one with kitchen). We are making it a 'high adventure' for the younger Scouts too young for Philmont but want to do something more, which is why I am leaning towards the cabins. But the boys organizing it might think differently, we'll see :)
I just got the York Adams Guidebook and am starting to read it over the break and then do a presentation and get some guys signed up and ready to plan!
The links are very helpful, thank you! Sounds like it is possible to hit alot of places, be interesting but not overwhelmed and have plenty of fun!
Thank you!

UPDATE: Got a cabin at Camp Tuckahoe for October and getting some interest in the trip. Big presentation in January covering basics and then picking a Scout Lead if the SPL does not come. Then they can plan and prep.
Thanks again for all your help and suggestions.

Hey guys another thought is the sharpsburg/antietem battle field. it is about 40 min from gettysburg. there are spots for the boys to camp on the battle field. It doesn't have the glamour of "Gettysburg" but it is just as awesome. . If you have trouble finding a site at Tuchahoe there is another camp just north of tuckahoe (30 min) in the Keystone area council, called Hidden Valley. The national Civil war museum is located in Harrisburg, PA not far from there.
It gets very crowed there just prior to a Jamboree. I was taking a class there the week before the last one and there had to 50+ troops a day going through the town.

Well had the first informational meeting last night. Just me outlining the basics of the trip and looking for some Scouts to step up and plan. We capped it at 28 (limit for cabin we have)…
Got 30 people to come to meeting, 18 to sign up right away. Going to be a great time! Will update and ask for advice as the planning progresses!
Thanks all for the help here. The boys love the idea of the Ghost Walk AND Pickett's Buffet :)
