Currently we have 3 Scouts in our Troop. These 3 have been members of a patrol since September when the 2 new scouts joined (1 scout joined troop last February after his own crossover) Rank wise they are a tenderfoot and 2 just about "Scout"

In February we have 5 Scouts crossing over from Cub Scouts. I'm looking for opinions/guidance on whether we should have the 5 join the existing patrol and reach the magic #8 or if we should have a new patrol, having one with 3 and one with 5.

I would ask them.  Have a meeting with all of them.

They might want to mix it up or start a new patrol.  The new guys could just egg on the "older boys."

It's their Troop and it would be their first taste of Leadership.

2 patrols, the old guys and the new guys…the veterans will be able to use the EDGE method and teach the new scouts.

Assuming that you are using the Troop Resource Guides, you will see in the meeting plan for patrol activities, and interpatrol activities.

I have a small troop, 9 scouts…2 patrols. SPL, 2 PLs…it works well, because the new guys have yet to learn skills that the other guys may not want to work on again.

As time passes and your troop grows, you may get scouts that will want to join an existing patrol, or one of the smaller patrols may just go away.

I had the same question…and, although I want a boy-led troop, this is one of those decisions that you, as the SM should "steer" the scouts to…the boys are going through a stage where things are soooo much different, and they don't grasp it.

What I am getting at is, yes….this is going to be Webelos III for a couple of years…get past that and realize that you are in the middle of training those young scouts, so that in 4 years, you won't even have to worry a bit about things….ask Jerry
