Ok, so last night our troop had parents summer camp meeting. Unfortunately I couldn't be there and my wife went. So here are a couple of the things that are on the troop packing list. I'm just looking for ideas for durability, functionality, etc…. We are in Maryland and it will be HOT when they go to camp this summer in July.
Footlocker – Plastic or wood? I say plastic.
Rain Gear(The Troop is saying that ponchos don't work) – I am absolutely clueless. I mean, I have gortex stuff(and I'm not going), but my son is 12! He's growing and I really don't think that getting him gortex is the right move.

It depends on the camp I guess…
Footlocker? How about backpack or duffle bag.. how long are you staying in camp? What are you putting in a Foot locker?
Rain gear.. pants and top.. Ponchos become capes.
What other questions.. most Council summer camps are cookie cutter types.. there should not be too many Troop needs.
Have a Great Scouting Day!

Yeah, footlocker. They want something that will lock. They boys are in camp for a week. Clothes, toiletries, pretty much everything except for their day pack with their handbooks, etc… When I was a scout we did backpacks. We had to hike the 2 mile hike to our site from the parking lot. Jerry, any suggestions on quality pants and tops for rain gear? Looked at something called frogg toggs?

Frogg Toggs are what I wear. I love them. They are not the most durable for young boys, but your older Scouts will love them.
I would suggest your basic Columbia rain gear. light weight and good protection.
Our Scouts take backpacks to summer camp every year. We are in camp for a week also… we take a small lock box for meds and money, one of my ASMs is in control of it.
Did not mean to sound condescending in my tone about footlockers.. just never heard of that at summer camp before.

Jerry, you weren't condescending at all. I hadn't heard of it either, but it's what they do. This is a great Troop and they are in dire need of adult leader help. I will be one of the people who will be helping them. With our 5 boys that crossed over, and 4 more scouts that crossed over from a different pack, We increased the troop size by 60%! Good, but they are a little overwhelmed.

Our Troop does summer camp in the southeast, hot and wet! We recommend 24 gallon Action Packers by Rubbermaid. They are lockable and quite durable, our Scoutmaster's is 15 years old! I bought one for my son and myself last year(about $35 at Wally World), PLENTY of room and lockable. Doubles as a table in the typical BSA green tent as well.
One of our scouts brought an "old fashioned" wood foot locker, it lasted about a day without a huge crack down the top. Remember if it is a flat safe looking spot boys will either sit or climb on it!
I've never tried Frog Togs, but hear nothing but good about them.

I was doing footlockers at summer camp in the 70's and 80's…never backpacks, those were for hiking and monthly campouts. Even though were had a summer camp uni (scout shorts, socks and white t-shirts).
Poncho or rain suit. Ponchos have buttons now that will snap it closed on the side and reduce 'supermen' :)
While I appreciate the backpack and use it 11 months a year there is something to be said about a footlocker for long term. can be used as camp table for games or paperwork. Keeps everything nice a dry when actually kept closed and when you stuff 101 Scouts' equipment in the trailer for camp they stack nicely
