Troop Fundraisers

I posted a question on Twitter, wondering about fundraisers.

Our troop is in a unique situation where we are chartered with the local Moose Lodge, and that lodge has kitchen facilities. Every Saturday and every other Sunday, the kitchen facilities and hall are available to use, and we have been green-lighted to do whatever kind of dining-service fundraisers that we would like.

Now, not to take away from the boys and their leadership, one idea that I thought that would work would be a spaghetti dinner, complete with the candles, red & white checkered table clothes and the scouts in aprons wearing mustaches…maybe serving grape juice in bottles (purple and white). Personally, I think that the scouts would get a kick out of it, and maybe make a couple extra dollars doing it.

I am looking for other kinds of ideas…pancakes are good, but that would be pretty brutal cooking, as keeping up with an all-you-can-eat pancake dinner could be rough, although we could make it work.

Any other thoughts or ideas?

Can't help with menus.. but thought I'd weigh in, jsut to see if anyone actually reads the PTCMedia forums anymore.

We do not do any Troop Fundraisers.  A Scout is Thrifty and pays his own way.  We offer Popcorn sales, Candy Sales, and Christmas Wreath sales.  We do not do them as a troop, rather as individual Scouts.

Most of our Scouts get off their butts and mow lawns, rake leaves, shovel snow, collect cans, and even walk dogs to pay their way through scouting.

Ok.. thats my two cents.

Your post made me hungry.. now I gotta go eat.

Frankly, I would stick with the Boyaah that you got going on.  As a former chef and one who has toyed with opening a place, made menus and all….keep it simple and start getting to be known by one or two things as your speciality.

Just look at Diner's Drive-in and Dives.  Those places are known for one thing or two.  You want to go there.
Your next to some famous large green acreage……your going to make a killing!

If you want to branch out, you can get into large Turkey Drumsticks or racks of ribs (pork and DON'T BOIL THEM!)

These are very easy to make and serve.

I say all this because of your location, location, location.  Do this several times a year and you all can go to Philmont, Sea Base and that new place…what's it called?  Oh, and maybe Oregon…..;)

If your doing it in the dead of winter, you might want to sell a Cider (not Mike's Hard) but something that again, you get known for.

Big thing is, in Portland everyone needs a food handlers card.  I would check into this and other legalities before going too far.  You do not want to become a libility to the Moose Lodge and get them in trouble.  Always have a thermometer with you.  I can go on and on about this.  You might have to school the boys in Food Safety on the legal side, besides what they already know.

Hope that helps.

i read them – :)

the one nice thing about "being known for something" is that you can build a group of others who go there for the 3rd saturday of the lunch spaghetti dinner or pancake breakfast… easy to do when it can be the same day of the month
