Webelos to Scouts… splitting a Patrol?

We've got 3 Webelos II that will be ready to cross over to our Troop in February at Blue and Gold. This year the Pack also gained 3 new Webelos II. If I interpret the Boy Scout joining requirements correctly only the 3 AOL Scouts can cross in February and the remaining 3 will have to wait until June when they have "completed the 5th grade." Ideally I would like to have them cross together and start operating as a new patrol. I'm looking for suggestions to stay within the regulations but still keep ALL the Scouts engaged. Ideas?

Depends on thier age:

From the BSA:

Meet age requirements: Be a boy who is 11 years old, or one who has completed the fifth grade or earned the Arrow of Light Award and is at least 10 years old, but is not yet 18 years old.

So they have 3 options:

AOL AND 10 or

Be 11 or

complete 5th grade

What is their situation?

AOL is out of question as they won't make requirements
Have to find out when their 11th b-day is (are)
Complete 5th grade = June (3 1/2 months after rest of patrol cross over)

Oddly enough contacted my DE today on another issue and tossed this one at him… Said he will get back to me with "chapter and verse" even though I knew it already (what Bryan cited)… What intrigued me though is that he's steering towards crossing them all over in February and said that the requirements were designed for Web II who completed ranks early but that they DID NOT want to hold up the boys crossing over.

I know that this is an older post, but I am curious to know what happened? We had the same thing in the pack, but those boys that joined in September, have put forth the effort and have all earned their AoL.

We had a similar situation last year.  Our Webelos II den had 3 boys…two of whom earned their AoL and one who had not (single mother, didn't make it to most meetings, no camping, etc.).  Transportation and parental attendance/support were main factors in the boy being absent.  Given his situation, crossing to Boy Scouts would be the best thing for him to relieve mom of some responsibility for advancement, guidance, etc..  Our crossover was in March that year and the boy without the AoL would be 11 at the end of April.

Our DE and the troop the other boys were going to agreed to allow this boy to cross over with his den mates to the troop and be a "guest attendee" at troop meetings and outings.  The troop held his transfer registration until his 11th birthday.  Any advancement he worked on was noted as allowed by the requirements and signed off officially after his transfer was processed.

That way, he stayed with his friends, experienced the troop activities and wasn't left behind.

Like Shawn, I am curious as to how you eventually handled this.

Hey Doug…what's the deal?  What happened? we all want to know….

Also, I know this might seem odd to some but we (at the Troop) hold the first meeting for all new Scouts in March…reguardless of when they crossedover.  In the past we have had Scouts join early and late and none of those have ever stuck around…

Sounds like a good show topic :)

I FINALLY got an answer yesterday from the Cubmaster… 3 Scouts will be crossing over with Arrow of Light. 2 additional Scouts (twins) will also be crossing. Their birthdays were in December so technically both will be 11 at the crossover/Blue & Gold at the end of February. There is one Scout left in the Web II den that is waiting to transition til the end of June (by his/family's choice). And with those 5 Scouts – I will be DOUBLING the size of my Troop!

Doug that is AWESOME!  Congrats…

Beware the late crossover…the rest of the new Scouts will have had several meetings, campouts AND months of bonding that he will be an outsider to.

Remember the Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing team models….he will knock them back a step and a good SPL (and Scoutmaster) will be there to get them upright and moving again :)

I tried to express that to his parents as well after clarifying with our DE that he would be eligible to cross with the rest of his Den. (This Scout only joined Cubs as a Web-II). The response from the parents was "he's having so much fun in Webelos and he doesn't want to move yet." Personally I'm more concerned that with his den-mates gone he's going to lose that "fun" and wind up being absorbed into the Webelos I Den – but I've done what I can so he and his parents will have to work that out with the Pack at this point.
