Who attends your PLC?

In the New  Boy Scout Handbook there is a graphic of a "typical" troop  and who national believes makes up the PLC. I'll consider this a perfect world scenario.

In a perfect world the PLC is:

  • Senior Patrol Leader
  • Patrol leaders
  • Assistant Senior Patrol Leader
  • Troop Guide
  • Scoutmaster + 1 ASM (Two Deep Leadership)

Is this how your troop runs? If you run this way how does the information get to the ASM's? Who do you add? Why?

I think my son's troop has been suffering from "smallus troopitis" and needs a fresh injection of the patrol method. So i thought I ask some help from the experts here.

This is pretty much how my troop's PLC goes. The only thing different is that we have the Quartermaster there, as the QM and the SM discuss equipment condition and needs at each PLC (our PLC's are the Monday after the monthly outing, so equipment issues are fresh in mind).

We have very little adult involvement in the PLC – just the SM and one other adult.

OH.. and before I get beat up for "2 Deep Leadership"

Here is the quote from the G2SS:

  • Two-deep leadership.
Two registered adult leaders or one registered leader and a parent of a participant, one of whom must be 21 years of age or older, are required on all trips and outings. The chartered organization is responsible for ensuring that sufficient leadership is provided for all activities.
  • No one-on-one contact.
One-on-one contact between adults and youth members is not permitted. In situations that require personal conferences, such as a Scoutmaster's conference, the meeting is to be conducted in view of other adults and youths.
Meetings are NOT outings or Trips.
This is not Cub Scouts.   A Patrol can have a meeting without any adult supervision if they choose.
The rule in effect is the NO ONE – ON- ONE Contact.  If I am in a room with 6 Scouts.. that is in accord with the rule.
Our PLC meets prior to our Troop meeting.. there is always a parent there, besides me.. but they are not part of the meeting.

Patrol advisors: each patrol has an asm patrol advisor to help when needed (keeps mom and dad from taking over) With 118 scouts this helps me alot.

The scout master is trying to weed it down to just:
  • Senior Patrol Leader
  • Patrol leaders
  • Assistant Senior Patrol Leader
  • Troop Guide
  • Scoutmaster

The issue being one Parent / ASM / Wood Badge Bead wearer has it in their head that all the ASMs  need to be at the PLC because that's the way it worked best at other units and will generally work best.  The SM, another ASM and I believe the program works  best as written  not as interpreted.

So my post was trying to figure out if the  basic PLC was best or if many had modified it.  Too bad I feel we'll be battling this until March at the next elections.

Garry…

I wear Wood Badge beads also.. you should ask siad "Wood Badger" how many ASM's sat in on the PLC meetings at Wood Badge?

The ASMs should be getting their information from a regular meeting with the SM…

But thats just me… oh and the BSA..

Hang in there.
