So it was about this time last year I had complained about pack issues and lack of leaders – blah blah blah… well that’s when work informed me that I would be travelling every week so I spent the past year working 1200 miles from home and seeing the family on weekends. I learned a few things this past year I would like to share.

  1. I would rather deal with pack issues than wonder why my son is not as interested in scouting after the fact because his current leader is not dedicated to putting on a quality program for the scouts.
  2. Being told by multiple kids that they liked the den more when I was the leader is nice – but it also shows the importance of training since the guy who took over from me is not trained (past fast start).
  3. I enjoy working with my son on scouting projects – a lot
  4. Getting to campouts is tough when you have flights to catch.
  5. Scouting taught me how to pack in a manner that is TSA friendly – and very compact :)

I am now back in town and going to work with my son and try to salvage things so he realizes scouting doesnt have to be boring.

Very glad to hear that things have changed at home, the scouts missed you and that you are getting back into Scout Nation.

I would bet dollars to donuts, that everyone will be glad to see you back, except your family, as I know that they are happy that you are back

…and now you know how to pack properly, too…Smile

Jeff,

Thanks for the post.  I've been suffering from some burnout and this put things back into perspective.  Glad you are back off the road.

i was flying into EWR (thats Newark airport for you n00bs :) ) every week and also had a bit of burnout before.

it is so nice to see the guy that was recruited for CM working out so well. he is an eagle scout and doing a PHENOMENAL job. really getting buy-in on many things i wanted to do but never really had the time to implement. i also just found out we got quality unit for this past year – which we never earned while i was a member of the pack – granted i dont think we knew what we had to do to earn it so my first goal as CM was to get this – and voila!! so i am a little proud of that one. at one of the campfire events i was able to attend he was dressed in full Seminole indian regalia and the whole group enjoyed that one.

more than ever – i see the importance of providing a good program for the scouts. if we as parents aren't involved and putting forth the effort – we cannot expect our scouts to be doing the same.
