Do any of your districts or councils sponsor a belt loop 'college'? I'm thinking of having my district put on a day for Scouts to earn belt loops. I'm hoping that this might help with retention.
Thoughts?

I know that there was a pack in the area that used to hold a belt loop clinic for his pack, but sent out flyers to the rest of the district. I don't think that he got a lot of hits on it, but with retention rates dropping, anything helps…

I've been wanting to do a belt loop challenge for a while now in our district. Even thought about trying to pull off two. One in the winter (indoors, mostly academic beltloops), and one in the summer (outdoors, mostly athletics). Pick between 2 and 4 beltloops at each and have the boys who show up do all the requirements for the beltloop that day.
Depending upon the location and resources needed, the cost could be somewhat minimal. I would probably hand out certificates saying that the boy earned the beltloop that he can take back to the pack and their advancement chair can use to know what to pick up for each kid rather than handing out the beltloops themselves. This would keep the cost down quite a bit I think, possibly be able to do it at no cost.

One thing that I've seen is a "Passport", where the individual requirements for the b/l are in a booklet, with one page for each b/l. The boy takes it to each b/l workstation, does the requirement, gets it stamped and signed as completed. This makes it a fun thing for them to not only work on the loops but get their passport filled. And as has been mentioned since you aren't buying b/l, your cost is minimal.

I really like the winter/summer college idea and also the info on passports. I'll keep you posted as things progress.

I've been looking for ideas to make use of Pinewood Derby time.
Typically, we schedule ranks by the hour – you come for your hour, then go when you're done. Come back if you're a finalist.
I just think more can be done with that time. I thought of trying to do some sort of Scout-related "stations" – but never thought of centering them around belt loops.
I like it!
