Just a general question on how the BSA insurance policy works.   I had a Bear break a finger on woodworking project and wanted to offer that option to the scouts parents if needed.

If one has their own medical insurance, is there any benefit to going through a BSA claim?   I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has had to use this option.

I can't believe it happened.   I tracked down the smallest hammers I could find, thinking that that there would be some hit fingers…  I had pretty basic tool box lined up, and made sure each parent was helping their child.   Then all of a sudden,Ii see one of the scouts in tears, and their parent abruptly leave the meeting.    I called them at home to make sure everything was OK, but the only info I have was from my son seeing the other boy in school with a finger splint.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Generally the BSA insurance is secondary insurance.  It picks up expenses that the parents' insurance won't cover.

Refer them to your DE who should at least know the right person at council to talk to.

I hope everything works out ok with the Scout.  Accidents happen, and it sounds like you couldn't make it any safer for them.

I do not know fully about this, but our Council (Cascade Pacific-492) says that in 2011 they are offering insurance for no charge. Not sure if this is National or not.  Would check with your Council.

An incident report needs to be filed. It is secondary insurance but they have an interesting formula on what gets paid. My son had a tooth broken during a Scout activity last year. As a result he's had to have a couple dental surgeries and this week is getting a root canal on said tooth. Not much was covered by regular dental insurance. Wife and I have estimated that it's going to be about $2000 out of pocket for what isn't covered. After submitting to BSA was advised that their maximum payout for this incident would be $300. Needless to say I lost my faith in the "God forbid anything happens there's the BSA insurance".

Every council handles their own insurance, that's why it is an extra charge in addition to the recharter fee (or at least it is here).

I have luckily not had to deal with the BSA insurance issue before (even though I've had to take kids to the hospital from a campout, the parents' insurance has covered all of it or they didn't feel the need to pursue a claim with the BSA). But I do know one family in our council who had a pretty major accident while at a campout and the cost of medical expenses after their insurance paid out was pretty extensive, a couple thousand dollars or more. They had to argue with the council back and forth about it for quite some time to the point where they had to take the council to court.

The interesting story is that after the filed they got a call from the Judge Judy show asking them to come onto their show. They said that the producers told them that they'd pay all the expenses for travel, etc…and that no matter what the judge ruled they'd pay the medical bills. When the family (who actually are two parents who are very dedicated leaders at both the unit and district level) let coucnil know about the offer, suddenly the bills got paid in full within the week. Strange how that works.

The problem is that no matter what the organization or it's purpose, insurance companies are generally all greedy jerks who don't want to pay out any money for anything ever.
