I have been 'tasked' with coordinating a Cub-o-ree for this Fall.  Great!

But, I can already tell that it will be quite a task and will need to be broken into many pieces for others to take care of as well.

I was wondering if anyone in PTC Media world had planned these before.  If so, do you have any planning documents, etc. that you could possibly send me?  I want this cub-o-ree to be awesome!

The big thing now is coming up with the cost.  I am sure I will miss something very important when coming up with the cost but don't know what it is.

Right now, I know the camp cost per person and the additional facilities cost.  There will be a patch, so there is a cost with that.  Anything else?

Thanks!!!

I am so glad that your posting this because we would like to do a cub-o-re in our district. The main reason being that there is not much district level for the Cub Scouts to do. I would love to keep this open and bounce ideas off each other. Good luck and hope that all gos well for you.

Here is a link to a Webelos Woods event that we have done in the past and I have been on the steering committee. It's Webelos-based, but, using it as a template, I think that you could easily adjust it to all levels of Cub Scouting.

Hope this helps

Just had our first Cub-O-Ree.  One night overnight.  OA helped put on Campfire program.  Lunch/Dinner were provided. Breakfast was on your own.  The Packs that came were required to do a station.  we chose BBguns.  Total of 7 stations.  $10 per person with a patch.  Lunch was not included since people did brown bag it.  It was $2.50.  There was a Scout's Own and then BB Gun/Archery Range open for 3 hours on Sunday.  That allowed for boys to use that as part of earning their Pin.  225 people.Cool

Thanks guys.

My original idea was to have a spook-o-ree type event which would encompass different spook-ee activities.  Pumkin decorating, costume contest, tent-o-treat, not too scary spook trail, punkin chunkin, stuff the scarecrow (Cubs put on a big shirt and others in den stuff hay into the shirt and dress him up like a scarecrow) and other such nonsense.

Another idea would be a Belt Loop day at camp.  BB guns, Archery (the big ones) and then various other belt loop activities.  Each to be handled by a pack attending the event.

Campfire on Saturday night, Scout's own service on Sunday.  No formal events on Friday but packs can camp that night as well if they wish.

Unfortunately, I didn't get 'tasked' with this event until March of this year and I made the mistake of booking the camp for the same weekend as University of Scouting.

So, our big issue right now if finding a camp for another weekend. We have a very popular council camp.  It has been recently updated with flush toilets, shower houses, grand lodge, climbing wall, and new activity shelters.  It is a great facility….but that keeps it booked.  On the plus side, I have now booked it for October 2012!!

So, I have looked out of council for good cub scout camps and have found quite a few but they will impose fees on us for staying.  Camps in our area charge about $3-4 pp per day.  I understand why they need to do this but it essentially doubles the total amount of the cost for each scout.

I'd like to keep it $10 or under per scout charged for the event.  We will probably offset that amount for the scouts in our pack but other packs may not be able to do this.

We would most likely have around 400-500 people.

Shawn – Thanks for all the docs!  Now you've got me thinking of a Webelos only event for the District.  They have to earn these activity badges anyway, might as well do it at camp!

So….I'm going with the original idea of a spook-o-ree type deal and planning on using a primitive camp for the event.  I hope that this won't detract too many moms (and dads) from coming to the event.  We will most likely truck in some rental portajohns as some of the latrines at the camp have been 'condemned'.  Surprised

Some possible events:

-Stuff the scarecrow

-Decorate an adult (homemade costume contest)

-Scout Costume contest

- Pumpkin decorating

- Pumpkin chunkin

- Scare Trail / Tiger Trail

- Carnival type events

- Graveyard compass course

- Possible other stuff to do with pumpkins, gourds, hay, fall type stuff….  Should find plenty to do.

Going to try to keep it low cost/high fun.  It really doesn't take a lot of $$$ to entertain the cubs.

The committee chair of my pack has run ours the last 3 years – would you like me to try to "steal" any of our info?

our district cub-o-ree usually ends up somewhere where we have no site fee (council facility or local park who will host us).  Port-o-lets are a cost… they try to get food donated for breakfast, and most of the money is spent on patches and maybe one outside presentation done as one of the rotation stations.
