I ask because I have skipped them for this years recruiting.   Let me tell you what I did do, before defending my decision…

A couple of weeks before the round-up, I did have a presence at the school's open house for 2 hours and made contact with about 10 to 15 families (handing out flyers with the round-up information).   Most folks did the “wide sweep” around the table to avoid any mis-interpreted curiosity.

Four days before the round-up, a take-home flyer went home with every boy in the school (including the Kindergardners for the Lions Pilot we are doing).   And there was even a blurb in the county paper reminding folks of the area recruiting efforts.   Basically, anyone with any measurable interest had my contact information.

I didn't take advantage of the boys talks for 2 reasons.   1) I work the overnight shift, so their lunch-time is my midnight… and 2) Last years Boy Talks seemed to only gain a handful of skeptical families “on-the-fence” who didn't make many meetings, or aren't continuing this year.

This year, we had about 1/2 the recruiting turn out, but signed up all but 1 of them.   I am actually more excited about having a slightly smaller Pack… but with folks that are noticeably more enthusiastic about being there.

The DEs in our district come and do the boy talk at the school during the lunch hour, maybe that is something that you can look into…

I have one awesome DE in our district and the other is a poor-performer….the awesome guy is in my “territory”…so we 'win'…

Sorry, had to edit…

Yes, I believe that they work…sometimes you have to have a better gimmick….

If the school will allow it, bring in pizza and have the current Cubs come and eat pizza with you…jealousy does seem to work, or go the route of a puppet…I have read that it works, but I know that Buttons is a hit in my home

I would never turn down an opportunity for Boy Talks.  The years that we held them, my pack's recruiting numbers were 33% – 50% higher than they years that we didn't have them.  Keep 'em brief, talk about the cool thinks that kids can do in Cub Scouts and put a "Join Cub Scouts" sticker on every kid.

If you asked me a year ago… I'd say "fantastic".  I did my first one a year ago (first time in a long time for our unit), and we got about 15 or so new scouts.

I also set up at the schools open house or "curriculum night" at our school – and talked to the parents directly.

The last 2… spring, and this past fall, maybe 10-12 kids between them.  So after that initial success, it was a little deflating.

But the kids love them!  I always get a positive response from the kids – and nice comments from the ones who've seen me before – boys and girls.

I borrow a projector from the schools AV dept. and run a slideshow off my laptop of pictures from Scouting events over the previous year.  Better than any pinewood derby car or brag vest I could show them.

Kiff76  A boy talk is a recruiting tool used stateside when the unit can gain access to the classrooms, cafeteria, or sometimes  morning video announcements.  A volunteer or Professional scouter  talks to the boys about scouting in hopes that they return to the  scout recruiting event that night. If the Person giving the talk is able to get into the cafeteria at lunch time, or actually visit the classroom they will often give the boys a sticker with the meeting information  on it.

In many cases this is a very highly effective tool for at least getting an initial interest. In rare cases where a scouter actually works in the school,  a boy talk given by the school employee is a magical recruiting tool.  This year we had a new  pack of 25 form around a school employee that gave boy talks

Ahh thank you Scouter Garry,

Sounds like a very good thing we generally rely on word of mouth in the UK or the progressions from Beavers to Cubs to Scouts to promote retention

We never really tried it before this year. In the past 5 years we got 7 to 10 new kids sign up by putting fliers in there Friday folders that they all take home. This year we did boy talks at two of the three schools and we signed up 59 new kids.

Pretty sure we're in trouble !!!!

Our DE and DD do the boy talks and I believe they help in getting the boys excited about Scouts which in turn probably increases the number of boys who show up to our school night recruitment events where the parents sign their sons up.
