Mine's is still safety pinned on upside down waiting on that good turn to get done. He's hit a selfish patch lately.

Somewhere someone wrote that pinning the patch upside down until a good turn is adding to the requirements. I think parents can require whatever they want from their boy.

I'd say that the someone somewhere who wrote that is mistaken, but that's just me.
It isn't adding any requirements to the badge. The boy has the badge, the advancement report has been filed with council, the records are there. He's earned the badge and he's received the badge. So pinning it on upside down isn't adding a requirement to the badge/rank/patch.
It's a reminder to do a good turn, that "A Cub Scout gives goodwill." That simply finishing that badge doesn't mean he's done, he needs to stay with it.
And besides, the parents can flip that baby right side up the second he gets out of the meeting and no one will know the wiser. It's up to the parents (or the Scout, depending upon the family) to affix that badge to the uniform, only they know if the boy actually did a good turn or not. We pin the badge on upside down as a reminder to continue to do a good turn.
Much the same way as some people have a Scouting challenge coin that starts off in one pocket each day and gets moved to the other side once they've done their good turn for the day.

For anyone else teaching their kids to sew on patches, I'd highly recommend using an embroidery hoop. Yes for some people it may be obvious but for those of us (waves) who are not so swift it was a revelation. The hoop keeps the fabric smooth and even so it doesn't bunch up under the patch, and it's easier to pin it in position. This is especially helpful for rectangular patches or others that you don't want to show up crooked–hello, troop numbers. :D

that's great! :)
My son is most of the way through his Tenderfoot, but I don't know when he'll finish it. He barely wants us to look at his book anymore.
I think he's finished his first merit badge, though: First Aid. Guess we'll find out at the Court of Honor next week.

My son went into Boy Scouts and has taken full advantage of the "no pressure to advance" structure…he's been to every troop meeting, campout and event but I don't think he's done squat towards his rank stuff. Though from what I hear they're going to be running the first years into the ground at resident camp this summer with Tenderfoot / 2nd Class / First Class skills.

mine has a renewed scouting spirit. he has talked to me about ideas for his eagle project… completed his first merit badge… working on geocaching merit badge … chomping at the bit to become something in his patrol (once the new kids get established and set up into a formal patrol)
i drop him off for his 3rd campout with the troop in 3 hours – he is taking the dutch oven and going to enter the cooking competition with his patrol. theyre cooking mac-n-cheese and pineapple upside down cake. (and yes – the mac n cheese is from scratch :) = and the meals were picked for them)

First CoH was tonight. He got his Scout rank and his First Aid merit badge. Looks like he's got some sewing to do as soon as I get him a sash.
School's out next week and he has robotics camp this summer so he's going to work on that badge as well. His first troop campout is in 2 weeks, and scout camp is in July–he's planning on model camp so hopefully that will help with the rank stuff.

So here's a question. The Scout "rank" isn't actually a rank badge. It's essentially a badge that says "I joined the Troop!" There is no requirement for a Board of Review and the requirements don't even appear in the same place in the handbook as every other actual rank badge.
So my question is should a boy have to wait until the Troop's next CoH to get that Scout badge, or should it be given to the boy immediately upon completing the requirements (which would be the Scoutmaster conference where they review the joining requirements)?
And for boys who have earned their Arrow of Light and crossed into the Troop in which they had the Scoutmaster Conference required for AOL, should they be handed the Scout badge immediately upon turning in their application and medical form?
My feeling is that with the Scout badge, it should be presented immediately upon completing the requirements and not wait until the next CoH to get it since it is not a rank.

You are correct, Scott…the badge should be handed out immediately, or within a reasonable amount of time. Personally, I do it after I do the SMC…actually, what I have done is put down the previous week for a date, and then do the SMC and hand them the badge. The recognition from the troop is there, but the "ceremonial" recognition would come at the CoH.
The ones that cross, would have to wait, also. The date on the advancement form for the Scout Badge shouldn't be before the AoL or transfer date.
From what I see, the new scouts have come to the meeting with everything "Cub" and then during the SMC, we talk about how Cubs and Boy Scouts are different, focusing on the uniform. That's usually when I hand them their AIO numeral, necker, woggle and Scout Badge.

We crossed over in March and the CoH was in May–so I don't think it was an unreasonably long time. But, then–I guess you have a point, that if it is not so much a rank badge, why does it need to wait?
What I did wonder about–one of the scouts in my son't patrol got his Tenderfoot rank. And their patrol doesn't have a cheer, yell, or flag. I'm guessing, maybe he crossed over a little earlier and was put in with another patrol temporarily, and learned theirs? Is that normal?

The requirement for Tenderfoot #8 is "Know your patrol name, give the patrol yell, and describe your patrol flag."
I suppose a clever Scout could argue that the answer of "we don't have a name/yell/flag" would count as a correct answer since it doesn't say you have to have all of those (but why wouldn't you???), just that you have to know what they are. Saying "We don't have one" is knowing what they are as opposed to "I don't know we haven't decided yet."
Personally, I wouldn't buy that response but one could argue it meets the letter of the requirement, if not the spirit of them.
