This is from a larger ceremony that highlights colors for each of the ranks… At the time we did it only 2 Scouts (Bears) were achieving rank badges… All it took was a little face paint but the boys loved their "war paint"

Bear CeremonyCUBMASTER:
When the scout reaches third grade he begins working from the big bear book. Just as Akela met the BEAR with courage, the Scout walks the BIG BEAR TRAIL. On that trail he finds and conquers 12 challenging achievements in the categories of God, Country, Family and Self. He then receives his bear badge.

ASSISTANT CUBMASTER:
Would (INSERT NAMES) and their parents please come forward and stand here facing the audience. [Assistant Cubmaster escort the Scouts and their parents to the stand next to the ceremony table, facing the audience, with the parents standing behind their Scout.]

CUBMASTER:
You've completed all the requirements for your Bear badge and have moved along the Cub Scout trail. Receive now the mark of the Bear, a Green mark, symbolizing nature and your growing knowledge of the world around you. [Assistant Cubmaster, mark each boy with GREEN face paint]

It is my pleasure to award your Bear badge to your parents, who have been your Akela in completing these requirements. Parents please award this badge to your son and congratulate him on a 'Job Well Done'.

Parents, you may pin the badge on your Scout. Place the metal pin on the left shirt pocket flap upside down. Scouts, when you have performed your first good deed, you may turn the pin right side up and then present it to your mother. Congratulations! You may be seated.

Ok this was my first ever Advancement ceremony as Cub Master so taking a page from Cub Master Chris I went big. It might seem complicated & long but it was actually really easy & went pretty fast. Most of the props I used were items found in my basement. I made a list but you could really use about anything. Just lay everything out on a table the crazier the better. I did my best to hide the fog machine in behind the other devices.  This only took about 15 minutes to setup.  This really peaked the boys interest as they showed up. With the Fog machine warming up the small wisps of fog really added to the look.  I have the script below of how it all played out but to be honest I improved most of it.  This was a great way to start off the Pack meeting & everyone had a lot of fun.  If anyone needs anymore details please let me know.

Props

The Device (Mad Science lab)

Metal bowl

Metal Stock pot

Jumper Cables

Electronic kaleidoscope (anything with flashing lights)

Fog Machine

Random PC Wires / Cables

Computer Speaker

Laptop

Sound affects file about 15 to 20 seconds long (I used random Doctor Who & Star Wars Sounds)

Duct Tape

Test tubes

String / Rope

Beads

Dirt

Pocket knife

Cub Scout Sweat (Water)

Bear Advancement:  The Experiment!

Cub master:  Ok Scouts tonight we are going to conduct a science Experiment!  Using my trusty Transducer

Cub master:  Now I saw this on a Cartoon once so I am pretty sure it will work….

Ok I will need a couple of Guinea pigs   I mean Volunteers!

(Pick only the Scouts who are advancing)

Cub master:  Ok now some safety gear just in case.

(Pass out some random safety gear the goofier the better.  I had some goggles a old WWI Helmet and Paintball mask)

Cubmaster:  Ok so what will get if we add the following items into my trusty Transducer. (Any random Star Trek Techno babble)

Some String & Rope

Dirt & Rocks

Some Cub Scout Beads

Scraps of leather

Feather

Popcorn

Pocket knife

And lastly some Cub Scout Sweat!  (Test tube of water)

Cub master:  Let me bring everything on line. Keep an eye on the lights as long as you don’t see any lights we should be ok.  (Now the Electronic light show I had showed mostly red lights)

Scout: uh oh the lights are red!

Cub master:   Are you sure they are red? They look a little orange to me.

At this point act like your checking the device. Flick a couple of switches & make it ready to go.

Cub master:  Ok everything looks good is everyone ready?

Now I went to the laptop to fire up the Sound File I created (Dr who & Star Wars sound affects) as the sound effects played I hit the button on the fog machine. Then to be goofy either step away or hit the ground.

Cub master:   As the fog clears ask one of you the boys to remove the lid from the metal bowl and remove blocks of ice.  Have the scouts take a close look & tell everyone what we have created.

(In each block I froze a Bear badge )

Cub master:   Now we would normally ask the parents to come forward & pin the Badge to the Scout but I am not sure how well the would work.

With the Scouts holding their frozen badges I talked to pack about the hard work they each had done completing the Bear Trail .

Does anyone else wish that Chris did a compilation of his Pack meetings? Ours are so stuffy and meeting-ish, that I'd love to see a "real" fun pack event.

It's such a shame that there isn't a vlog of those type of things. I hear about ideas and props, but I'd love to see 'em in action and practice.

How about another LC show about pack meetings? They did it a long time ago, when they had Bill Smith as a guest (one of the earlier shows. I don't remember the number, but I could look it up. I don't think it's available right now on the site).

It's a great topic that could be repeated every couple of years as new PTC'ers come into the fold, either by re-posting an old show or doing a new one on the topic. (Actually, many of the topics can be repeated every couple of years).

A bit off of this forum thread, but one thing that I wish I could have seen from my old pack, along with having good ceremonies, is a way to get the Webelos (especially the second year Webs) involved. When my second den were 2yr Web's this time last year, it was next to impossible to get them to come to a pack meeting. There was just nothing for them (everything was below their level). Often it was just my son and another in our den. He began to hate pack meetings because of it. The pack didn't really take their needs into account, and their needs are far different than a Tiger!
