Hey all, (or if your Chris it would be "y'all" :))

Anyway,

I wanted to share a new way of awarding the cub scouts that we came up with this year.  It's called Cub Bucks.  We were entering our fundraising season and having problems coming up with awards for top sellers (since we don't subscribe to our Council's sponsored fundraisers) .  We tried getting Walmart Gift cards one year, and "scouting-ish things from Walmart another year and it just seemed to fall short, so now, we give the kids (and their parents) a choice of how THEY wish to be awarded. So what we came up with was Cub Bucks.  Here's how it works, at least on paper so far: after our wreath sales (which is the first fundraiser) the boys' totals are added up individually and they then earn either 1% or 5% (this is still in discussion in our Committee) and I hand them that amount in Cub Bucks (see below for example).  Then, they can either spend their Cub Bucks on tickets/entry fees into specific scouting events or purchase something out of the Scout Store Catalog (which they basicly turn in those Cub Bucks and the order is drawn from the Pack account for the chosen "award").

Here is the Cub Bucks I created, if any of you wish to try this in your Pack(s):

1 dollar Bill of Cub Bucks (Tiger)5 dollar bill of Cub Bucks10 dollar bill of Cub Bucks

20 dollar bill of Cub Bucks

(BSA should come up with a better character for Webelos)

Is there a way to effectively track this? What I am saying is, if you hand a scout 50 CB [Cub Bucks], and he loses them, then what? Or is it more for show and the actual amount is tracked by the treasurer or someone else.

On the design, it's great, just be careful, as it looks as though you used real money or a pic of it…even though we know the purpose, some may not Smile

If I may, I would recommend using colored paper, and a more simplified bill…you can print in black ink, and only have to change the color of the paper…red, yellow, blue and green for example.

We used something like this a few years ago, and it worked for a year…but then we found CBs all over the hall after the meeting. Some parents thought that it was real scout money, and that they could go to the scout shop and use it there…yea, really…and others wanted to go and buy a videogame and use the Cub Bucks for it. So we had to make "on the fly" changes.

It morphed into scout accounts, and the scouts get most of the profits from fundraisers, and then they pay annual dues, and only use the money for scouting events, scout shop purchases and camps…and we no longer use the paper money.

From reading the Original post  and Shawn's  reply, my take on the cub bucks program is that it is an ISA ( Individual Scout Account) where the pack is making the scout  or their parents responsible for all the accounting of the account by giving the scout Cub bucks..

Part of the  paper “money” idea is to make a big show of awarding the cub bucks IMHO.  My pack has been off the Trail's End prizes for two years now. We haven't gone to cub bucks yet.  Here's my idea to how to deliver the big impact of an ISA program for CUBs.

First  Present  the details to the parents. They need to know that the ISA / cub bucks program  is  for  use in the pack only. If they want to use it to purchase kits, crafts, books, or gear from the Scout shop the order has to be placed to the pack appointed person and that the treasurer is responsible for maintaining an accounting of the use.

Second instead of giving boys say $110  in cub bucks. Find somewhere you can print or enlarge  a faux check  on to 11X17 paper. Trim to look like a check and present each boy with an “award check” like they do at the large tournaments.  Making sure to say this money has been “wired” or “deposited” in their ISA.

Webelos Woody!

The checks are a great idea.  In our pack we do the ISA's with 100% of popcorn commission going to the boys' accounts but they don't really get anything since it's all handled through the bank account.  I'll have to bring that up for January's pack meeting.
