I am looking for a pack and den flag pattern. I am very lucky to have a scout grandmother that is willing to make us some flags just need a pattern. Can anyone help????

Gosh. I dunno, Nancy.  We just got a big piece of blue felt and threw some hand prints on it and fabric paint and called it good. :)  In my experience, den flags are whatever you want them to be.  Typically, the "official" ones you can buy at the scout store are just blue with the big cub scout logo on them in gold and with the den number somewhere on there.

So really, unless you have specific reason otherwise, have each den do what they want to make it "theirs" and make the base however you want so long as it's fairly consistent.  (Actually, that isn't THAT important, it just makes presenting them at pack meetings and other events easier.)

Is there a reason to not go with an official Pack flag? (Cost would be the first objection to come to mind – and why do "toppers" have to be so darn expensive?) I like the idea of different Den flags with a consistent base. For ours we used dowels for the flag poles and spray painted coffee cans half filled with cement to anchor them.

I've always been a fan of allowing dens to use their own creativity on their den flags.  It also helps to inspire a little good-hearted competition between the dens on who can make the coolest flag.

Big agreement on that ("allowing dens to use their own creativity on their den flags"), Arvada!   If there is anything worse than just being known as "Den 7" as opposed to "The Sabre Toothed Tigers" or "The We're Wolves", it is having a generic Den Flag.

When I cut loose my Wolf Den to make a flag, the meeting idea went like this:

–  Flag Talkin' and Lookin' Stuff (generically discussing “flags” of a country, of a state, of a city, of a School, etc., and the meaning of flags (why we have them, what is shown on them, what flags say about the people who are represented by them)

–  Then we took it down a level and discussed the idea of Family Crests and, then even individual or personal symbols.

–  We then moved to each Cub designing their own “personal crests” or “family crests” that display “who they are” and what image they want to present to the world.

–  Then, we introduced the next step, and put the questions to them to decide:  the first question was, if we had a Flag for "Our Den", what should it look like (how can it show “who are we” and what image to we want to present to the world when they see our Flag).

–  The second question was: OK, so . . . do we want to have a Den Flag?

Answer was "yes", and the drawing and planning process made the meeting run (a) 30 minutes long, and (b) about as orderly and cooperatively as you would ever want to see.   Parents actually didn't mind waiting, as they watched them in slack jawed amazement draw, share ideas, lay out what would go on the flag, etc.  Wild.

Ultimate project results were sloppy, borderline ugly, clearly the product of a Committee, but it was by Gawd THEIR Committee that did it!

And (while it would embarass them if they were reminded of it now that they are 13-14 year olds), man, they all wanted to be the "Den Flag Bearer" each week . . .

Ensuring that dens know to make the bases for their flags the same size is the key there. The suggestion I'd use is to have them use the $5-from-the-scout-shop stave (aka hiking staff aka shovel handle) as the flag pole. The staves can come in handy at other times too, like campouts or Klondike Derby!
