Pack Trainer Question – Tracking Training

Hi,

This is a question for Pack Trainers or anyone who is responsible for keeping track of the training and Trained Leader status of their unit.

What resources are there for tracking and reporting training and the Trained Leader status?

I have been using the Training Trax spreadsheets which works – more or less, but it doesn't reflect the changes in the Online/Trainer Delivered BSA training. I have created a spreadsheet based on this one that does some of this to pass out to my leaders, but It would be nice to have something that wasn't too busy or confusing.

Any suggestions would be great.  It would be nice if BSA could have something that could assist in this area (maybe they do, but I don't know about it).

Hi Brian,

When I was PT, I was in the same boat as you are. I had trouble finding the right tool to track training. Being an Excel guy, I ended up greating my own spreadsheet. It was very large and very difficult for non-Excel people to read, so I created a summary sheet that listed each leader and what training they needed to take.

Another issue I had is that I had trouble getting help from my council. I called and e-mailed a couple of times asking them for training records from my pack. They were very nice and courteous, but I never got the training records. I eventually gave up and just nagged the leaders to give me copies of their training certificates, which I kept on file.

I'm sure there are those out there who did this better than me, but I've heard from enough people on the various Scouting forums to assume that we are not alone – that tracking leader training is a fairly difficult and manual process.

Now that more and more is moving on-line, I think things will get better. But what about those of us that took our training classes before this movement to on-line training? What happenes to those records?

Sorry I didn't really offer any assistance to you (other than the summary sheet for missing training records). But you aren't the only one with this issue. Even though I'm no longer PT, I will be interested to hear what people post concerning this.

I'm not pack trainer, but I've been keeping up with my own courses, as my pack does not have a trainer.  I like the Training Trax, but you are right, it is NOT up-to-date with the most recent changes.  Hopefully they will be changing that soon!

I used to use the trax spreadsheets, but since our Pack started using Packmaster, that is all I use.  I have come to really love Packmaster for all of the information that it keeps track of.

I have to update some things and get my database up to date, but I will be moving away from the Trax and going to the Packmaster, as it has more updates.

I had been using a spreadsheet I created myself and that has worked well, but I've been moving more away from that and towards scouttrack.com since it is also the site we use for advancement tracking and it is working very well for us.
