Just finished listening — great show! The last part was especially good … it's all part of what none of us seem to want to talk about!!

Have to say that I was not too impressed with the TravelJohn. Tried it on our of our last camp-outs and let's just say they gel didn't work as quickly as I would have liked.

After that experience, I purchased a Go Girl <http://www.go-girl.com/> I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I think the design is along the same lines as the Freshette.

I really hope the packs aren't going camping where these products are needed though! Otherwise somebody needs to refresh their BALOO training.

Listening right now. I love the MISS show!

Liberty, I heard your request for what others do at campfires. I'm filling out a program planner for our campfire right now and there are two things we are going to do that stick out as something different – or at least different to me.

I want to do this action/repeat after me song. This video is from my boys Cub Camp (resident) last year in Germany. It was hillarious!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..yy1D1QJSgs

The other thing I really want to try is a "magic start" fire. I actually learned about this at my Webelos Outdoor Leader training. The one they used was a bit complicated with "strike anywhere" matches, which I don't think I can find here in Austria. I found this idea and I think we're going to try this one out.

Tin can, open at one end lying on its side under the fire. Stub of candle stuck to a small board that fits inside the can. Tie a string to the board. Light the candle and stick it onto the board in the can. THe can keeps the tinder from lighting. To light pull the string which (hopefully!) pulls the board out of the can and starts the fire. Need to build the fire carefully so that the light from the candle can not be seen.

Thank you, Kerry!! <3 I started a thread for this (belatedly – I was so busy today I forgot to do it earlier). Definitely appreciate the ideas, as I think MANY people get stumped when coming up with new material for a good campfire and ways to make it interesting, different, and keep it fun!

Another GREAT show from my favorite ladies of PTC! Thanks for the tips on female camping gear. I think that we all wonder how others handle the subject but we really don't want to talk about it. As always a good show. Thanks for all that you do.

Some things I remember doing as a boy that were neat.

One time while starting a fire, we had rigged up a line from the fire up onto the hillside where it looked like one of the Assistant Scout M asters had climbed in a tree and lit an "arrow" which was sent down the line into the fire and woosh! Was an awesome effect, but you need the right conditions and setup to pull something like that off.

The other thing that I remember always liking was this one run-on (that's what I call them) that a couple of the assistant scout masters would do at almost every campfire. Its called simply "Elephant Repellent" The key is to time it so its between acts or items, somewhere in the middle one of Assistant Scout masters runs out with a spray bottle of water or a bucket as if they are trying to put embers out that are coming out of the fire. He runs in circles around the fire doing this, and as a scout I was wondering if something was wrong with the fire before the dialog started.

ASM1: Hey what are you doing?
ASM2: What's it look like I'm doing? (Start's spreading more water)
ASM1: You tell me?
ASM2: I'm spreading elephant repellent of course.
ASM1: Elephant Repellent, there isn't an elephant within a hundred miles of here.
ASM2: Gee this stuff's great, its working already.

I always loved that one as a boy. It never got old.

That's a GREAT one!!! We keep seeing the same run-ons. My son LOVES to do them. He's a Boy Scout now, but is a Den Chief in my pack. He was planning on doing a couple at our next camp-out. I can't wait to share this with him!!!

Kris, it was SO entertaining. The boy scouts who led it nailed it, but the crowd couldn't figure it out to save our lives. HA HA! When I got home I googled and googled trying to guess what they were saying. I finally found this link, which gives several versions of the song. It might help to listen along to my video and follow along with some of these examples.

I remember doing that one at Camp a long time ago though now forgotten the motions et. al. :D

Yeah Strike Anywhere Matches have been hard to find for a long time. Then one day I was in Krogers and they had a bunch, I picked up a huge box of them because you never know when your starter could be wet etc.

I heard about the strike anywhere's at my Webelos outdoor training, in Connecticut about a year ago. The trainers told me that they couldn't get in them in CT, but they were apparently available in Rhode Island or New Hampshire – can't remember which. So they had to make strike anywhere runs for matches in a neighboring state.

If I recall correctly the issue with the Strike Anywheres has something to do with Phosphorus in the tips? I remember them becoming scarce a few years ago when new regs here in WV made getting certain supplies (LIke Sudafed over the counter) due to the expansion of Meth labs in our region. Not 100% sure that is why, or if they just were not being bought enough to stock in huge numbers.

By the way, for any of you who take your scouts on cleanup projects, things aren't as safe as they used to be. Our local political organization that we were doing Adopt a High Way with had to take videos to even tell us what to do if we saw stuff like Hypodermical needles, or other supplies noted for being dumped where people have tried to make Meth on the road side. So you have to make sure your kids are aware to be careful about things they pick up too.

(I realize its not related to the thread, but it just occurred to me it might not be common knowledge)

(note we haven't started such a thing with our Scouts yet, this is something I encountered with another organization that has been working to try and get our community cleaned up.)

Suggestion on what to do with patches….When I received my eagle my troop gave me a wonderful picture frame with every merit badge, rank, position, etc that I had earned with a red felt like backing. You could probably do something similar for all the other patches you'd need to find a place for and then it could be displayed anywhere.

Belatedly – but I'm sure it'll come up again:

Pack Duty Roster that our pack uses at campouts:

http://sillywoppat.com/MISS/fi…..ROSTER.doc

I like to use this because it puts kids (where appropriate) and adults in charge of activities so I know who is supposed to be where. We used this at Cuboree this past summer and it worked wonderfully. Our "Fire Marshall" taught the Webelos about Fire Safety so they could earn their Firem'n Chit and monitored the grown-ups so I didn't have a bunch of adults tossing stuff on the fire so I'd have to stay up until 3am.

I didn't have to stress over whether or not tents were appropriately being set up (or that adults were doing it in place of the Webelos who needed to at least help). I actually had one of the Venturing Crew guys supervising tent setup with the kids and only one adult insisted on also helping – the rest were glad to let someone else do setup for a change!

Having the roster posted meant "everyone" knew what they were supposed to be doing so there was less confusion among adults and kids. I only had one kiddo come ask me, "What should I be doing?" the whole time, and that's because he was our solo Tiger and I had been negligent in putting him on the roster since he didn't have a whole den to support him.

Annnywaaay, figured I'd include this even if it is a tad late. :)

Dear Emily,

A year later, a year wiser. It doesn't much feel like the first time, anymore, does it?

But man we got skillz, now: http://youtu.be/0m3Siw_9ftA (BEST. FRESHETTE. VIDEO. EVER!!!)
