A new PTC Media show…a practical look at everyday operations of Boy Scout troops. Anyone can podcast about what the book says, but Scoutmasters Bryan and Shawn talk about the things that makes their units work, things that don't, and things that haven't been tried yet.

Bryan & Shawn, great first show! Excellent discussion, and I really like the feel. It really was like being in that parking lot after Roundtable. Looking forward to many more…

Great start to a great podcast. The dichotomy of the 2 Scoutmasters works very very well. Being a small Troop leader and long time PTC fan it's easy to feel envious of the "big troops" that have it all going on. Over time I've learned it's not necessarily the size of the troop but what you do with it. Looking forward to many more episodes in the future.

I have to agree with scouter Doug, sometimes the larger troops seem to be the "best thing going" but I think they both have good and bad points and the podcast really helped to show them. It was a great podcast, and I would like to see the activities of each side in a year. Does the calendar change from year to year or is it set each and every year? I know of one local troop that does the same event each month and has for the past few years. It seems like that might not be the way to go however by having the set events each month, all the scout are exposed to all that they do in a years time. What are your thoughts on something like that?
Looking forward to the next show!

Joe,
I think the key to a quality outdoor program is a good annual rotation. Large or small, it does not matter, do something different each year. it is fine to have some same old same old IF the Scouts want it. We always do a lock in, we do a Ski Trip and Summer Camp (but rotate where we go). Outside of that we have 9 months of campouts to plan and stay away for going back to the same place for the same thing to keep it fresh. we have used the same campgrounds for different events…gets you to see it from another angle.
In our Troop, the PLC meets in Sept and plans Dec to Dec. They brainstorm with either camps to visit, activities to do or events to participate in. Then all Scouts vote on each item, Yes or No. Then the Scribe ranks them from most votes to least votes. Then they start to combine the things…hiking at State Park, etc. Then they place them in the months where they best fit (no swimming in October, etc) When the months are filled we have an Annual Plan.
