Scoutmasters Bryan and Shawn talk about the parents who hover, get underfoot, and just may not understand the differences between the Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs…they affectionately refer to them as "helicopter parents"…

Great podcast. Lots of helpful tips and tricks. Making me wonder if I am a Heliocopter Parent and don't know it. Maybe I should start a group Heliocopter Parents Anonomous (HPA)? I know that I am not (see…) but it gives me a good guideline on what my next step will be once my son crosses over in 2013. I have already told a Troop what I want to do. One ASM our UC explained to me their training of new ASMs. Along with that info, I have realized that I need a break from Cubscouts before I go into Boyscouts.
Thanks so much. Look for blog posting soon about this on my blog…;)

Great show. I listened to this one first, and just wrapped up #1.
It's funny, at Scout Sunday a few weeks ago I was talking to one of our Webelos II parents. We had just awarded the boys thier Arrow of Light the night before at the Blue and Gold, and they will be crossing over to Boy Scouts in March.
Mom and I were talking about what she has to do get him ready. We had a long discussion about the differences on Boy Scouts vs Cub Scouts, but in the end I said "Just remember, there's no Akela in Boy Scouts."
I'm waiting for more.

I know you already touched on the pros and cons of the two sizes, but I'd love to hear more about implementing the Patrol Method.
Specifically, in a small troop, how do you have (or do you even need ) a PLC when the troop isn't much bigger than one patrol. Isn't a Senior Patrol Leader pretty much the Patrol Leader (or looking at it the other way, isn't the one Patrol Leader by default the SPL?)
By contrast, how does the PLC manage a troop with 13 Patrols?
How does the role of the adult leaders change in regard to working with the PLC in the two different sized troops? Does one size need more adult involvement than the other?
Thanks, guys.

Guys LOVE the show.
We run our pack a little different than most. We no longer have a parent of lets say a wolf be the wolf den leader. They can be the assistant or leader of another den. The reason for this is that we have had way too much favoritism and it was questionable on what they did and didn't do. We have found that the boys do so much better if their parent is not their den leader. Tigers is the only exception as we all know.
Webelos we all so do a little different….Jr. Webelos: parents can sign the handbook but the young man has to bring to the leader proof of what they did..then the leader will sign it off. Sr. Webelos: Only the leader can sign the book. Our theory is that this this will start to ween the parents off signing the book and the boy to learn the responsibility.
We encourage the troop to be very involved in the troop so that if they are around a lot then the W2S transition will not be as stressful.
Love the show and am so glad that your doing it. Keep it up. Looking forward to your next show.

Nancy, do you have all your dens meet at the same time, then? If not, how do you deal with having leaders and boys on different schedules?
All our old pack's dens meet different days of the week, decided on by the families in that den. I can't quite imagine, say, leading the Bear den on Tuesdays and having to have my son at Wolves on Wednesdays. Just seems like a lot of extra coordination for those families with leaders and kids. Or am I missing something?
