#69-Webelos To Scout Part 1

Tonight we will be talking about Webelos and the process they take to become Boy Scouts. Webelos is unique in Cub Scouts because it not only gives the Scouts more change for adventure but also encourages them to take on more responsibilities. All of this is designed to prepare them to become Boy Scouts. Let us prove to you that the transition can actually be fun and adventurous. This is part 1 of a 2 part discussion.

Good show, informational…thanks

I was listening to one part of the show regarding cords for the Den Chiefs…there are diffrent colored cords for the rank that the Boy Scout serves at. There is a mutli-colored one if serving for a Webelos Den, and a Blue/Gold for Tiger, Wolf and Bear.

As for the shirts, here is the breakdown…

If you stay with the 'blues' til Boy Scouts, only the Tiger badge is removed and replaced with the Webelos Rank Badge, they will still produce the diamond…

If they go to the 'khaki', then only the new Oval badge is worn on the shirt pocket, like the Boy Scouts.

Couple other things to remember…

It's a Patrol Den…yes, it's a pain to say it, but that is what it is, until Boy Scouts…

ClassB.com has an excellent choice of patches for patrols.

I noticed that there was a lot of 'let the boys plan it, don't do it for them'….very true, but what we did, was to limit the choices for the patrol den emblem…if you show them 30 patches and you have 7 boys in the den, you may have 7 choices. Give them a choice of what they want, but it will need to be decided on by them, not the adults. And just to add on that, once they get to a troop, they may have a new patrol anyways…

Other than that, waiting for show #70…good job guys

Shawn,

I am glad you liked the show. It has been a long time since I did cubs last, and doesn't help that I don't have any kids of my own …

Thanks for the update on the uniform – there has actually been a lot of changes with it since I last did cubs….

ClassB is a great company, but I better say they are a InsaneScouter sponsor, but still they have a wonderful products!!!

With the patrol names, I agree about giving them limited choices, I have seen Boy Scout patrols take weeks to choose one just to try and change it again two weeks later.

I can't wait to see how part 2 comes out. For a strange reason I like to see how Chris edits them and really appreciates all the "uh, uhm, huh" he edits out. Sorry Chris for making it so hard…

My understanding is that you can use the diamond patches on either the tan or blue shirt, but the oval badge is only for the tan shirt.  The AOL patch goes in a different spot depending on if you have the tan or blue shirt and if you're using the Webelos diamond patch by itself or if you're using the the multiple diamond rank patch option.

(I had to look this up a few months ago because I had several Webelos II parents ask me in the last couple of months when we migrated our Webelos I den to a Webelos II Patrol back in April and national was just starting to come out of the hazy period when they switched the tan uniforms around.)

This was an excellent  show.  Great job, guys.

The first year I was a Webelos Den Leader, I didn't have a clue what I was doing, so we didn't run as a patrol.  The next year we did and it made a world of difference in how the boys worked together as well as giving them more insight as to how things would work when they crossed over.

We were not invited to our district Spring Camporee (the activities were not Webelos friendly that year) but we did go to our district Fall Rendezvous (very similar to Camporee) sponsored by the OA and it was awesome.  Our lil Den competed as their own patrol and they actually beat out quite a few boy scout patrols in some of the activities.  They came in first place out of everyone there when it came time for the uniform inspection.  I can't tell you the sense of pride they got in not only getting to hang out with the older boys, but in getting to be a part of what was going on.

As for boy lead instruction, YES… boys learn better from other boys!  I've watched den leaders struggle and struggle trying to teach a den how to tie a square knot or get the cubbies geared up for a skit only to have the den chief step in and in under five minutes get those guys on track without blinking an eye.  I think even within the troop setting – boys learn from each other so much more quickly and seamlessly.  Not everything can be taught by boys, but if there is something that can be, take advantage of it!  Not all Boy Scouts are cut out for working with younger kids (heck, let's face it, not all adults are, either) but those that do really do thrive and grow as den chiefs.

(And selfishly, as a previous den leader, I wouldn't ever want to be a den leader again without a den chief to help out.  Boy Scouts know stuff.  Important stuff.)

One of my most favorite scouting memories was when the OA put on my younger son's Cross Over Ceremony.  Those OA boys were SUPERSTARS to the Cub Scouts.  Some of the boys even asked to have their Blue & Gold programs autographed.  The gleam in those cub scouts' eyes as the OA guys came out in full regalia is something that I'll remember forever.  Some of those OA boys later helped teach merit badges and scout skills to my younger son and he was so excited to remember meeting them.  Who could ask for better role models, right?

Webelos to Scouts transitioning is such an important part of retention from Cub Scouts into Boy Scouts, but more importantly, I think it's important in order to keep those older Cub Scouts interested and excited even in the Cub Scout program.  At age six, the boys are thrilled just to have a uniform and to memorize the motto, oath and law.  By nine or ten, they definitely need more challenges and responsibilities in order to keep them growing and thriving.

Thanks so much for this show.  This will definitely go on my "must listen" for our pack den leaders as they near or enter a Webelos den leader position.

I agree that boys learn well from other boys – like you said in the show – if they are a few years older, the cubs sit up and take notice.

As far as the cubs making choices, I plan to let my Bear parents know at the first meeting that the Scouts be getting more involved in the choices going forward and that they, the parents, will become less involved.  I plan to involve the Scouts in deciding which activities they do to earn their Bear.  That will help prepare them for Webelos and doing it themselves.

I also agree with the letting boys teach boys thing.  My son is left handed (I'm not), and it took me FOREVER to teach him how to tie a simple bowline, and he still struggled with it a little.  Then we went to a Webelos Camporee in May and at the knot tying station another Scout just goes, "Oh, you're left handed.  Pretend I'm you and you're looking in the mirror."  And it was like the clouds parted and trumpets blew because Jon was like, "Oh yeah," and never had a problem after that.

At the last couple of camping events, I brought some tying cord and Jon ended up teaching all the other boys there the Square Knot, Bowline, Two Half Hitches and Taut Line Hitch while I taught their parents.  I was impressed.

Great show guys!

I agree completely with how important a good WEBELOS Woods can be.  Unfortunately our District has planned the last 2 for the 2nd week in MARCH!!  rgghh Doesn't help much for the WEBELOS that just crossed over but the WEBELOS that did come enjoyed and got a lot of info and exposure out of it.  This year it has been moved back to January maybe the boys get on last look at the troops in action before they cross over although I guess most will have made a dscision by then.

Visiting multiple troops is soo very important.  Our pack did that for the 1st time in years  with the last set of boys that crossed.  ALL of them were on board to join the same troop the last group did as it turns out NONE of them did after the troop visits and they are all doing very well and having lots of fun!

Thanks!
