Hello All,

Just finishing up my 3rd year as CM (Pack's 3rd year as well).     This year, we have 0 senior Webs, and 2 junior Webs.   Next year, my son's current Bear Den will give us 6 junior Webs as the 2 current juniors go to senior.

My question is, when do the Scouts realistically have to decide whether or not they will be going into a Troop?  I know that much of the Web requirements involve learning Boy Scout basics, visiting Troops and doing activities with local Troops (which we have plenty around us).

I'm sensing that the Senior Webelos will have to be pretty open to the Boy Scout option going in (even though no one is committed until they cross the bridge and start upgrading their uniforms and such).     I'm asking because 1 of my junior Webs was very much on the fence about continuing past Bear, because of some homesickness he experienced on a Summer camp overnighter, even though it was in cabins… and his dad was with him.   We talked him into giving Webelo 1 a try, and he's having fun.   But I'm not sure how he'll handle the senior Web year as we try to step up the outdoor stuff.   His dad and I aren't really able to offer him too much advice, because neither of us were in Boy Scouts in our youth.

Thanks

John R.

There is no time for a boy to decide…he can leave and come back at a later time. Most of the time, that doesn't happen, but that choice is always there.

If your are really trying to get kids to Boy Scouts, then have the scouts start doing troop visits, getting outdoors, and practicing all of the things that Boy Scouts do. Find some troops that may be able to lend a hand in educating ALL of you…

I can handle "no" as an answer, as long as their decision is an educated one. If someone says "Timmy isn't going to scouts, because he doesn't like it" just doesn't sit well with me. Find out why they don't like it….maybe that homesick kid needs a night away from both parents…who knows.

As for stepping up the outdoor effort, start doing that with all of the scouts, starting with the Tigers.
