ok was not sure where to put this…..

My husband was at SM/ ASM/ IOLS this weekend and they told him that there is two guides to safe scouting one for Cub Scouts and one for Boy Scouts. I don't get it. I know that Boy Scouts can do a lot more on their own then Cub Scouts but isn't there just one GTSS?

What started all of this is that our Scoutmaster doesn't communicate very well and he moved the meetings without telling the ASM or CC. He said that it was ok because he had 3 boys with him so two deep leadership was not needed.

I need some help here Boy Scout leaders….. any advice? Isn't that against YP? Very flustered!Yell

I see that you have 2 questions…first one…

There is only ONE Guide to Safe Scouting. If someone is telling you that there is more than one, have them produce BOTH copies. That will shut them up, because there is none.

For the second issue, there is no 2-deep leadership requirement for troop meetings, only campouts and overnighters. And even on overnighters, the only thing that is restricted is 1-deep leadership. You can 0 or 2, but not one…yes, I said 0…it's called patrol camping and very much acceptable per the G2SS (Guide to Safe Scouting)

thank you Shawn for clearing that up for me. The main thing that upset me was the 2 GTSS book thing.

As for meetings thank you for that. The comunication thing is the other major problem. Maybe time will work that out.=

I know the patrol could go out with out any adults. Boy lead troop right.

Thank you so much

No worries, but a SM who is changing meeting nights without telling anyone is asking for trouble…IMHO

Hi there:

I agree and disagree with Shawn.  First, There is only ONE GSS.

Second: Page 16: (No Patrol Campouts alone anymore.)

Patrol Activities—A Boy Scout patrol or Varsity
Scout squad may participate in patrol activities with
the permission of its Scoutmaster or Coach and
parents/guardians. Appropriate adult leadership must
be present for all overnight Scouting activities.

It's a bummer.  I suspect it's in reaction to lawsuits and really dumb Scoutmasters who just don't know and get their Troop in trouble and loose lives.

I was saddened by the new GSS restricting Patrol Outings…i've tried to encourage my Scouts to do them, not it is too late :(

so now 2 Deep required on ALL outings. No so much meetings or such…

Rule of thumb NO ONE ON ONE!

Worry not Scouters that love the real Patrol method.  Your Patrols can still camp alone.. well kinda.. 2 Deep leadership does not mean holding their hand.  They can still camp in their own camp site.. away from adults.  Adult leadership need only be present.. but not on top of them.

We do this all the time.  The Scouts take off down the trail.. they establish a camp site, we make one a couple hundred yards away.  That is still in range to provide the necessary "Leadership".. and yes I use that in quotes.. we should not be providing "Leadership" at all.  We provide guidence, mentoring, coaching.. but not "Leadership".

Anyway.  Let them camp alone.. just be near by.  The results are the same.  Patrol time.

Just my 2.5 cents on the issue.

Have a Great Scouting Day!

ps.  1 G2SS.. and only 1
