Part 2 of my discussion with Mike Walton.  In this addition we try to answer the question "Where have all the Black Kids gone?"

We talk about money and the value of Scouting and much more.

We will wrap this discussion up in Part 3 next week.

Leave us feedback and let me know how you like the show.

Have a Great Scouting Day!

Jerry, another great show. In response to your question to where have all the black kids gone? Here in the Baltimore Area Council the Maryland NAACP and the Baltimore branch of Boy Scouts of America have formed a partnership to make scouting more accessible to children from poverty-stricken, inner-city environments  in a pilot program called First Class Camp. We hold a series of Day camps at different locations around the city and surrounding counties and help Scouts earn the requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class. The day camps are open to all Scouts under the rank of First Class and taught by Scouts First Class and above. The NAACP helps to sponsor the camps and encourage inner city and disadvantaged troops to attend. The First Class Camp program will pair boys from poor Baltimore neighborhoods with mentors and will be paid for with $10,000 the organizations plan to raise with the help of a local congressman. NAACP leaders say they hope the program will be copied nationally. The program has been up and running for over 18 months and has been very successful so far. Everyone is learning, advancing and most of all having fun. And that is what scouts is all about.

And just to make it clear, I am an Asst. Scoutmaster of a "White" Troop and my Troop was asked to help teach at the very First, First Class Camp.  I believe my Scouts learned as much, if not more, then the Scouts they were teaching. This was the first time most of them had taught outside of a Troop meeting and they were (If I can brag) very good. Now they are all very excited when they hear there is another First Class Camp in our area, and they want to teach again.
