The family and I were on our way to a Cub Scout outing at a nearby amusement park yesterday as I was listening to this episode. My wife thought I was nuts when I was yelling “Jim Lovell” as you two were reaching for the name of the Distinguished Eagle Scout that Tom Hanks played in Apollo 13. You’re right though, it’s a perfect example of the “Successful Failure” as it was called. They didn’t meet the objectives of the mission, but they returned home safely.

I took Wood Badge in 1995, when it was the course was separated into programs (I took Boy Scout Wood Badge), and it was based on the 11 Leadership Skills. I also took it as a week long course, rather than 2 weekends. It was and still is one of the most important experiences of my life, short only of achieving Eagle Scout.

A few years later, as DE I saw the materials for the new Wood Badge for the 21st Century, and our council was one of the first in our cluster to host the new course. It certainly intrigued me, but I never saw the course in action. Thanks for this description and telling us your experiences.

Great Show Jerry!

I experienced Wood Badge in August and September of 2008 (two three day weekends). Like you, I had seen a lot of what was presented in project management classes for my job. I am sure that I probably subconsciously used those skills when I was doing scout projects but I never really thought about it. Attending that course showed how much value purposely using those skills could be.

One thing I really took from the training was EDGE. I made a special effort to think about and plan to use these steps when doing something with the scouts in my den and pack. Before Wood Badge I would get the ED but not much on the GE. The Trainers ED never seemed to cut it :-)

Keep up the great work!
