Welcome back to the Scoutmaster Minute Podcast. In this show we talk about High Adventure programs in your Troop.
Building a High Adventure program in your Troop does not require a Trip to Philmont.. You can do it in your own Council area and in the State you live in. The sky is the limit when it comes to Scouting and High Adventure!

All very good information.

Questions about training:
You talked about the Leaders who are going need to be trained and know how to backpack.
What does your unit do to make sure that the Leaders are trained to do what the boys want to do.
Does the PLC/Committee tell the ASM/Leaders/Dads to get trained in certain areas?

I have signed up for the Intro to Outdoor Leaders Basics..ITOLS in Nov 2010 with CPCBSA.
I am also looking to get the CPR/AED for Adults/Kids trained and then Wilderness First Aid. (Just need to find the time…..)

Thanks Adam,

No the PLC does not tell us to get trained.  The Scoutmaster is the only adult that sits in with the PLC.  Once I see the direction that they are heading, we start the process of getting the right training.

Now having said that… when you have a Troop like mine that is consistant in it's quest for adventure it is pretty easy to know.

Even within a Youth led program, we have some influence on the direction the troop will head.  Once we train the PLC on how to plan and prepare, they do a great job in charting a course for the year.  Years back we introduced the idea of becoming a "Backpacking Troop".  The PLC grabbed on to it and ran with it.  Once that direction was set, the ASMs (and I) started picking up as much training as possible to facilitate the activites that would soon appear on their calendar.

Some of the training we have collectively completed:

BSA Climb instructor (Climb on Safely etc)

COPE Director

BSA Life Guard

Wildernerss Medicine (First Responder/ WEMT)

Leave No Trace (Master Trainer)

CPR

BSA Powder Horn

BSA Ranger Master (NRA RSO)

Basic Mountaineering

Local training through Mazzama's on Backpacking and Wilderness trekking

That's just a short list.  I am sure that if I really sat down and put together the comprehensive list of all the training that myself and the ASMs have completed, oh not to mention the Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, YP, Hazardous Weather, etc training through the BSA, the list would be a lot longer.

My point here is this.  In every part of the program the BSA requires "QUALIFIED SUPERVISION".  We take that statement serious.  QUALIFIED… we are trained and can teach, coach, and mentor the activity.. and SUPERVISION.. we are watching the Scouts do it.. not doing it for them.

Take the time to get as much training as you can.. your Scouts benefit from your dedication.

Thanks for the info. I figured that once the SPL & PLC start down a course of action the SM/ASM & others will do what is needed to make sure that everyone is beyond safe. Since I am not in a Troop and was only a Cubscout, I did not know how the communication from the PLC to Adults flowed.

I am early in my Scouting career, so I will have time to get what I need.
The other part of it, is dealing with a pack that is re-building. The ramp-up takes the longest time. It is my goal to leave the pack in good shape so they can just build on where I left it.

Pack's to me are always in a state of flux since there are parents who are just getting the idea of what Scouting really take. By the time the boys move into a Troop, the parents are trained and Adult Scouters are more stable withing the troop.

Thanks.
