Thanks Adam,
No the PLC does not tell us to get trained. The Scoutmaster is the only adult that sits in with the PLC. Once I see the direction that they are heading, we start the process of getting the right training.
Now having said that… when you have a Troop like mine that is consistant in it's quest for adventure it is pretty easy to know.
Even within a Youth led program, we have some influence on the direction the troop will head. Once we train the PLC on how to plan and prepare, they do a great job in charting a course for the year. Years back we introduced the idea of becoming a "Backpacking Troop". The PLC grabbed on to it and ran with it. Once that direction was set, the ASMs (and I) started picking up as much training as possible to facilitate the activites that would soon appear on their calendar.
Some of the training we have collectively completed:
BSA Climb instructor (Climb on Safely etc)
COPE Director
BSA Life Guard
Wildernerss Medicine (First Responder/ WEMT)
Leave No Trace (Master Trainer)
CPR
BSA Powder Horn
BSA Ranger Master (NRA RSO)
Basic Mountaineering
Local training through Mazzama's on Backpacking and Wilderness trekking
That's just a short list. I am sure that if I really sat down and put together the comprehensive list of all the training that myself and the ASMs have completed, oh not to mention the Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, YP, Hazardous Weather, etc training through the BSA, the list would be a lot longer.
My point here is this. In every part of the program the BSA requires "QUALIFIED SUPERVISION". We take that statement serious. QUALIFIED… we are trained and can teach, coach, and mentor the activity.. and SUPERVISION.. we are watching the Scouts do it.. not doing it for them.
Take the time to get as much training as you can.. your Scouts benefit from your dedication.
Have a Great Scouting Day!
