Gear questions:
1.  Down booties.  Oh good grief.  The Scoutmaster wears booties???? Smile
2.  Tent stakes go in their own bag and then in the tent bag.  Otherwise they will get lost.  Guaranteed.
3.  Flannel pillow.  Flannel is my friend.
4.  Gaiters – snake gaiters in Florida are often for snake prevention.  Gaiters connect your pants to your shoes.  They can be worn with shorts but work really well with long pants.
5.  Stuff sacks are cool.  In the old days the Boy Scout Fieldbook called a Scout backpack a "bag of bags".
6.  Roll a tent around the poles.  Roll your ground cloth around the tent with the dry side out.  Hanging it up to store at home is good.
7.  Pack covers are good.  Overnight the pack goes into a contractor cleanup garbage sack.  Pack covers are not good enough for overnight deluges.
8.  Light weight hiking or running shoes.  HiTechs.
9.  Games?  Games?  The boys need no more than the forest or an open field.
10.  Group cooking.  Cooking gear is cheap.  Stove, pot, spoon.  Cooking is done in pairs and trios so they can share a stove.  They don't have to share stoves, but it is a good thing to do.

YMMV

Yep.. Down booties.. up here in the Northwest.. the feet get cold

Gaiters.. will not go out with out them.. dry laces do not freeze, and in the good weather months, sand, rocks, and sticks stay out of the boots.
Always use the stuff sacks.  Organization is king!
Most out fitters recommend stuffing the tent vs. rolling or folding.  eleminates creasing and wear.
Running shoes good for summer.. not so good in most of the mountain areas we backpack in.  A good hiking shoe or boot is a must.
Not so hip on games.. the boys take care of themselves in that department.
Group in my troop is two or three man buddy teams.  Real easy and cheap for them.
Thanks for the comments Larry
