Whats it gonna take…?

I recently purchased a car for my wife, as we drove into the car lot my wife and I were joking about the sterotypical Car salesman and the line "Whats it gonna take to me to get you into this car?"… we have bought serveral cars from this dealer and trust them… that and they never give you "That Line"…

Then I got to thinking… "Whats it gonna take… to get more listeners to the SMM Podcast?"

PTC, a trusted name in quality Scouting Podcasts, The Scoutmaster Minute, 3 years of podcasting with lots of shows out there.. but the numbers are dwindling folks.. I know that there are Scouters out there that listen.. the downloads show that.. but in an organization as big as ours with as many dedicated Scouters there are in it… we should have more folks plugging into the show.

So this is my annual appeal… "Whats it gonna take… to get more listeners?"

Help me out SMM Faithful.. and I do mean that.. I appreciate each and every listener out there.

Tell a friend..

Take it to Roundtable…

Get your fellow leaders on board!

and let me know what YOU want to hear…

Thanks!

And Have a Great Scouting Day!

More cowbell!!! Cool

Seriously, a little more youtube and facebook presence, certainly wouldn't hurt.  Also, mentioning the podcast to your Roundtable commisioner is good, too.  I mentioned the podcasts to mine RT commisioner, and he plans on making an entire "resources" Roundtable out of the deal.  Of course, PTC Media was on top of the list.

I will agree with Jerry, but to a point…

We all do this for no pay, and none to little cost out of our own pockets. What I am looking for is feedback on things that would help us to get PTC out there, for little or no cost. Our sponsors, literally, keep the lights on…the podcasters of PTC depend on the listeners to spread the word.

All the hosts have Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, Skype accounts and email addresses. We are all available most of the time, but we need more exposure.

I begin to wonder, is PTC becoming irrelevant? Is CubCast better? Let us know!

Thanks for the mini-rant

First of all Shawn… CubCast will never be as good as what we produce on PTC… well they have some nice "Well Produced" content to Cub Scouts and their leaders.. but National has yet to put anything of value out for Boy Scout leaders, Boy Scouts, etc.

So again.. What's it gonna take?..

oh and this has nothing to do with money.. if our sponsors went away tomorrow.. and I hope they don't.. I would still do this podcast.

The more listeners we have in my opinion just makes Scouting better… and better Scouting makes it better for the young men we serve.. and that my friends is what all of this is about.

So share your excitement with your Scouting friends!

I have tried listening to the Cubcasts……tried.  I did my best.   Too polished and just not for me.  I stick with PTCMEDIA since the track record is good.   Topics are consistant and those who blog keep the fire going between episodes.

Several of my suggestions that I email to a few hosts are taken and a podcast comes out shortly there after.  That tells me that people do listen to suggestions.

I know that several of the listeners have made presentations at Roundtables with handing out CDs they have made.  That does help.

A lot of us will re-tweet and share  via Facebook to our non-scouting friends and those whom are involed to let them know what we like.  Preaching to the Choir is futile, but to others will gain a few more followers.

Maybe what would be good is to look towards the Venturing and SeaScouts side of Scouting.  If there were topics talk about them, maybe that population will come.  I suspect that with the older youth Venturing crowd they will latch onto podcasts and anything electronic.  SeaScouts would be very interesting.  Maybe a special on the Florida Seabase?  Even Northern Tier with all the Canoeing that can be done.

All this before sending the kids off to school and coffee…;)  YISLaugh

Get the word OUT!!!!

Like the old shampoo commercial, I told two friends and they told two friends and so on, and so on, and so on…

Use outlets like Twitter and Facebook, maybe offer some web badges or patches…have 5 guys join the forums and get a PTC Patch….

Make 10 Comments on any PTC Podcast, get a patch…

I would do a lot for a patch :)

You are not a true Scouter if you wouldn't do anything for a patch!

jk

We tried to put an ad in Scouting Magazine last summer. Their lawyers sent us a couple of changes which we needed to make, which I think we have. We have not heard anything from them since then.

Believe it or not, the number of folks that listen to podcasts at all is still fairly low. The people who do listen are usually going to be pretty loyal to the shows that they do consume, and if they're like me they subscribe to more than they have time to listen to!

When you consider how old the Scouting program is, podcasting is a relatively new source of information and it may take a while for it to be fully adopted. Although I'm a techie and under 40 years old (for another month at least), a good portion of the ScoutMasters at our roundtable are significantly older than I am. It can be hard to get those guys to use the District's Google Calendar, much less subscribe and listen to a podcast.

I'm on our District's training team and I give out some key web addresses in every class I teach, ptcmedia is among those links. I really think that it's word of mouth that leads to the success of a podcast, satisfied listeners will tell others.

I see the same thing that you do Fleabeard.  Most of the guys that come to our district roundtable and are truly interested in scouting are…well lets just say….older gentlemen.  I am probably one of the youngest guys there.  However, there are always new guys coming in and these are the ones to target for the Podcasts.   And, the guy that comes in with the white earbuds would be a good candidate as well.  Smile

I like the Podcasts because it allows me to listen and learn at almost anytime!  I have listened in my car and at work.

Cubcast is 'ok' but the programs from PTC are more along the lines of what 'the guys outside in the parking lot' talk about after roundtable or scout meetings.  This is how and where scouting happens.
