I can't do this…

Every once in a while, we hear Scouts that complain that they can't go paintballing or do lasertag, for the obvious G2SS violations [this thread isn't meant to start that discussion].

I have heard that boys have said that they won't do Scouts, because of one activity that they can't do, but what about the 412,976 other things that you can do?

Please, if you would…list one thing that you have heard scouts/scouters/parents say that they can't do, but follow it up with 1 – 100 different things that you can do….nothing generic, please [instead of saying camping, say hiking the PCT]

Also, any comments or suggestions that you tell parents when they have a complaint about not being able to do one certain thing…

Thanks!

Cub Scouts – We can't carry huge knives (think 6" fixed blade).

We can:

  • pole a raft around the pond at Camp Strake and look at the alligators.
  • camp on the Battleship Texas or USS Lexington.
  • tie knots our friends never even hear of.

“There are plenty of fun things the boys can do besides ___x___.  Can you help me think of a few to keep little Johnny from being disappointed about not getting to do ___x___?”

Ok, this may be a little UK specific, but here goes -

Can't do paintballing, but can do archery, shooting or fencing and gain the Master at Arms badge (Scouts).

Can't go on a bananaboat but can build and sail your own raft. Or similarly to BigMc's suggestion you can spend a night on HMS Belfast in London.

I think the 'can do's' far outweigh the 'can't' !
