Movies that are lesson-teachers

As I perused the internet this morning, I found a movie quote and posted it to twitter…the quote doesn't have a lot to do with this topic, but something else that I read…

One of my favorite movies is "Bridge Over the River Kwai"…a great WW II movie about POWs that build a bridge for the enemy. There is a lot to learn about overcoming and adapting, teamwork, proper planning, and what I feel, a few other topics that would be inline with what we are trying to instill.

There is some violence….shooting, depicted beatings and torture, and horrendous living conditions.

One thing that I got out of it, is the spirit and teamwork that the prisoners had…they were tortured daily, starved, not given proper medical attention, and forced to bear awful conditions. But, they whistled a song on their way to work everyday…one made famous in this movie, but more recently, "The Breakfast Club" from the 80's…

Not that this is important, either, but what movies, scout or non-scout related are good movies to teach a lesson or two to scouts?

“Pay It Forward” is a favorite of mine for teaching how to be brave enough to do the right thing.  Thematically, it is not appropriate for Cubs due to drinking, language violence and sexual content.  I think it is a great movie for Citizenship in the Community, although with a PG-13 rating you would want parental permission first.

I know it sounds cheesy, but the Lord of the Rings movies are also good lesson teachers (again, not Cub appropriate for the most part). It shows that even the smallest among us are capable of the greatest feats, the value in what one can accomplish through staying true to your friends, having courage and being brace enough to keep moving forward, regardless of what lies ahead. That may be an oversimplification, but it's pretty much it in a nutshell.

"The Sandlot" is a good mostly Cub friendly (I say mostly because there's always that parent who will likely complain if the movie isn't animated and G rated) that infuses lessons about teamwork, facing your fears and the value of friendship. "The Big Green" is another movie that has those same themes.

Since it's the holiday season, I have to add "It's a Wonderful Life" to the list.
